SOS Méditerranée

SOS MEDITERRANEE is a civil European rescue association founded in 2015 to face the humanitarian tragedy and the lack of adequate state rescue capacity in the Mediterranean on the deadliest maritime migratory route in the world since 2014. Created by a group of European citizens, our maritime and humanitarian organization has three missions:

  1. To rescue people in distress at sea.
  2. To protect and assist survivors on board our ship.
  3. To bear witness and raise awareness about the tragedy unfolding in the central Mediterranean.

Today, SOS MEDITERRANEE is a network composed of four European entities (Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland) sharing the objective to support our rescue operations at sea. Search and Rescue (SAR) operations have been carried out since February 2016 in the Central Mediterranean off the Libyan coasts with the chartered ships Aquarius and Ocean Viking. To date, over 37.000 people have been rescued by SOS MEDITERRANEE.

Working and reporting relationships:

Reports to the Logistics and Admin Manager while onshore.
Report to the Search and Rescue Coordinator while onboard and Functional supervision of the Logistics and Admin Manager.

Overall Purpose:

Working as a member of a diverse team which is committed to humanitarian and maritime search and rescue (SAR) in the central Mediterranean, the Logistician takes part in the onboard and onshore logistics of SOS MEDITERRANEE’s Search and Rescue (SAR) Operations teams, in a challenging, highly sensitive and quick evolving
European environment.

Roles and responsibilities onboard:

Under the supervision of the SAR Coordinator, She/He:

  • Is responsible of the survivors’ care onboard, which include:
  • Planning, organizing, and implementing a wide range of activities onboard with the support of other team members (food & NFI distribution, cleaning, deck watch, entertainment…).
  • Ensure the post-recue activities training and briefing of the team onboard.

Support upon request the protection team during their activities (registration…)Oversees the supply activities onboard:

  • Stock management of the Food, NFI and logistical resources needed to carry out post-rescue activities.
  • Updates all the onboard inventories with the support of relevant crew members (Technician, SAR Log, Bridge Team).
  • Coordinate the ordering process of all department on board, liaise with Logistics department on shore to settle procurement plan.
  • Supports the preparation of the port call: reception and storage of orders onboard (food, NFI, water and sanitation stocks), organization of the containers, cleaning of the material.

Oversees the identification and the implementation of the maintenance supported by the SAR team members, in coordination with the Deputy SARCO and under the Supervision of the SARCO:

  • All deck installations and infrastructures under SOS MEDITERRANEE responsibilities.
  • Crew/Living equipment under SOS MEDITERRANEE responsibilities.
  • Is in charge of all the SOS MEDITERRANEE communication equipment (IT, radios…) with the support of the SAR Log.
  • Is available for technical support to the medical team for biomedical maintenance.

Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability when making decisions and prioritizing the use of resources available on board.

Roles and responsibilities on shore:

Under the supervision of the logistics-Admin Manager She/He:

Manages the supply on shore:

  • Procurement of supplies for the ship and sometimes for the office: direct purchase, quotations.
  • Storage of goods and equipment.
  • Storage strategy and buffer stocks.
  • IT equipment of the Operations Department.

Ensures with the technical supervision of the Deputy Director of Operation – Maritime:

  • Identification of supplier to conduct the maintenance of the deck installation.
  • Define with the Logistic department and the SAR team the technical specification of the maintenances.
  • Establish an implementation calendar based on the ship rotation and availability (Port call).

Assists and supports the logistics-Admin Manager in:

  • Elaborating and improving supply strategy of SOS MEDITERRANEE.
  • Structuring the logistics department.
  • Elaborating and enforcing procedures and processes for the logistics department.
  • Supporting the Logistics manager in any task deemed necessary.

Profile :

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience (4 years).
  • 2 or more years of experience in logistics
  • Ability to insure light repairs and maintenance by him/herself – hands-on attitude.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrable experience in supervising, managing and training with multidisciplinary team.
  • Highly computer literate with capability in email, MS Office, including Excel, and related business and common tools.
  • Self-motivated, enthusiastic, autonomous.
  • Capacity to work under pressure and manage personal stress levels.
  • Ability to cope with uncertainty and frequent change of plans.

Conditions :

Open-ended contract (CDI):

On Rotation:

  • Work on board the Ocean Viking: 1/3 of time (generally between 6 and 8 weeks)
  • Annual Leave and recuperation days: 1/3 of time
  • Work on shore based in Marseille office: 1/3 of time

SOS MEDITERRANEE covers travel expenses from Marseille to the where the ship is (public transportation and plane).

SOS MEDITERRANEE covers costs on board.

SOS MEDITERRANEE does not cover costs of accommodation in Marseille.
