Reporting to the International Program Director, Livestock Technical Specialist will provide critical knowledge in the agriculture and livestock sectors to the international development and humanitarian world.

Job Responsibilities

Strategic:

  • Contribute to developing/reviewing One Health strategies and frameworks.
  • Support target countries and partners, to assess specific needs, priorities, and gaps relevant to One Health;
  • Lead the implementation of the animal health activities across the project, collaborating with other program staff
  • To improve prevention and detection of avoidable epidemics including naturally occurring outbreaks

Technical role:

  • Responsible for implementation of animal health activities within the following areas, disease surveillance, animal health economics, herd health management, one health approach, antimicrobial resistance in animal health, value Chain analysis
  • Provide technical advice and expertise and strengthen VWB/VSF’s country level preparedness in Africa and Asia and response to animal health-related emergencies at all levels;
  • Provide technical mentorship to program staff, implementing partners and key stakeholders.
  • Guide the development, planning, monitoring and evaluation of current emergency responses in Ukraine and South Sudan.
  • Lead documentation of livestock programming through development of the relevant progress reports, Donor reports, success stories
  • Representation of VWB/VSF in the relevant working and technical groups / forums
  • Identification, communication and support in addressing of program related risks
  • Work with International Projects leadership to assess and develop project proposals addressing livelihoods-related needs.
  • Provide professional technical input and review of field-level sector reports and proposals.
  • Act in a capacity of central resource center for all field-based livelihoods and market-based programming.
  • Work with teams to build the capacity of agriculture and livestock program staff through training development and delivery, troubleshooting support and technical backstopping.
  • Facilitate technically sound program implementation with staff, in-field partners and community stakeholders that results in high participation and empowerment of local communities.

Responding to Emergencies

  • Participating and possible deployment to VWB/VSF’s emergency response, as and when necessary

Qualifications & Experience

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures,
  • Ability to write proposals for donors, program reports, business correspondence, and technical reference manuals.
  • Ability to effectively conduct trainings, present information, and respond to questions from donors, colleagues, beneficiaries, and the general public.
  • Bachelor’s degree (Masters preferred) in Agriculture, Veterinary, Zootechnics, or Economic Development. With three (3) to four (4) years related experience living and working in a cross cultural context; or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Min 2 years working in Sub-Saharan Africa or South East Asia in a One Health setting
