Lifebox (www.lifebox.org) is a global non-profit organisation dedicated to improving surgical safety in low and middle-income countries and registered in the US, UK and Ethiopia Founded in 2011 by the authors of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist, Lifebox works to ensure that surgical teams around the world have the tools and training needed to provide the safest care possible for their patients. Our work focuses on three pillars: Anesthesia safety, surgical safety, and teamwork.

Purpose of role:
Lifebox offers a range of training workshops, on the use of pulse oximeters, teamwork and communication in the Operating Room, instrument sterilisation and maintenance, use of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist and others. Training materials are housed on the Lifebox Learning Network, and are presently delivered in a mix of in-person, blended, fully virtual and self-learning methods. The Lifebox Training Advisor provides input and advice on Lifebox programs and activities from a specialist pedagogic perspective. They have specialist expertise in optimising the learning outcomes of health-related training in low resource settings. They will work with the Lifebox program team, GCD, CMO, Fellows and others to provide expert guidance on training program design and implementation. The Teaching Methods Advisor will provide input and advice to all Lifebox training materials to ensure that they are optimised for use and impact. The advisor has significant experience in developing/producing curriculums and training materials for different healthcare professionals and at different levels using pedagogic or instructional design skills globally, most importantly in the LMIC setting. The advisor will work closely with the Lifebox Program and Clinical team and others to provide expert guidance on learning materials development and implementation.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide input into the content, objectives and quality of Lifebox training and related materials from the perspective of curriculum design and best learning outcomes;
  • Recommend and support the implementation of adjustments to Lifebox programs and materials to ensure the highest quality and impact from an educational perspective;
  • Provide input to the development and design of new training programs or projects;
  • Provide input to the method and content of the trainee assessment mechanism;
  • Contribute to the method of the training mechanism;
  • Contribute to methods of measuring the impact and outcome of the training programs.

Person specification:

  • Qualification in instructional design; postgraduate qualification or equivalent experience in medical education;
  • Significant experience working with clinical experts to devise, design and iteratively improve medical training packages and approaches for use in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs);
  • Expertise in adult learning methodologies;
  • Experience delivering training and facilitating workshops with medical professionals;
  • Ability to robustly measure the impact of training delivery, and improve accordingly;
  • Fluency in English; second language (French, Spanish, Amharic) desirable

Time commitment:
This is a part-time role with an estimated time commitment of two days per week for an initial
six month period.
