Reporting Lines
The incumbent will work under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative for Sri Lanka and Maldives, the technical supervision of the Development Law Service , the direct supervision of the Assistant FAO Representative (Programme), and the technical supervision of the Fishery Officer (Food Safety and Quality – Aquatic Products).
Technical Focus
The purpose of the assignment is to implement the food safety component of the project GCP/GLO/086/ROK – Smart and Sustainable Aquaculture through Effective Biosecurity and Digital Technology, to further strengthen the food safety capacity for the shrimp sector and work towards upgrading the food control system.
Tasks And Responsibilities
- Revise the existing food safety standards and regulatory requirements applicable to aquatic products.
- Compare those standards and requirements with those set by Codex or WOAH.
- Develop a plan for setting missing standards.
- Develop missing requirements as well as align those with international standards when possible.
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
- A university degree in Law, Food Science, Public Health or any other related field.
- A minimum of 9 years of work experience in Food Safety Law working for government agencies, private law firms, or food companies.
- National of Sri Lanka or must hold a regular work permit.
- Working knowledge of English and/or Sinhala/Tamil.

Selection Criteria
- An advanced university degree in Law, Food Science, Public Health or any other related field is desirable.
- In-depth knowledge of food safety regulations, standards, and practices. This includes familiarity with international standards like those set by the Codex Alimentarius.
