Amnesty International is seeking a Legal Adviser or Policy Adviser to provide law and policy advice to Amnesty International’s International Secretariat, including its various Regional Offices, and the broader movement on particular areas of human rights and related positions of the organisation, with a particular focus on children’s rights as they relate to digital technologies, including the right to privacy, participation and freedom of expression, and the necessary safeguards to protect their health and well-being; to develop, coordinate and provide training on children’s rights to the movement; contribute to the further development of the organisation’s legal analysis and policy positions on children’s rights; help coordinate efforts to strengthen the Amnesty movement’s work on the human rights of children; monitor developments at intergovernmental organizations level and at the national level and in other relevant forums relevant to human rights standards, p olicies and practices pertaining to children’s digital rights, and identify opportunities for pro-active engagement in collaboration with the relevant Amnesty Programmes, Offices and Sections; and, support the organisation’s strategic litigation on specified areas of human rights.

This role will play a key role in a highly ambitious 6-year programme of work that Amnesty is starting to make the internet a healthy, safe space for children and young people. This programme is based on Amnesty Tech’s ground-breaking digital surveillance work, embedded in Amnesty’s new Global Children & Youth Strategy and will help advance children’s rights in Amnesty International building on the children’s rights action plan led by the Law and Policy Programme’s.

We’re looking for an outstanding and highly experienced adviser to strengthen children’s rights work in the organization, starting with our efforts to develop research and advocacy campaigns targeting big tech companies on the human rights impacts of digital technologies on children and young people’s digital rights, particularly in relation to their health and well-being.

About the role:

As Legal Adviser or Policy Adviser you will work closely with country and thematic researchers, advocates, media officers and campaigners in the International Secretariat and Sections/Structures to ensure human rights law and the organisation’s human rights policies are applied and advocated in an effective manner through research projects, advocacy initiatives, media and campaigns. You will lead on and/or significantly contribute to specific projects and activities related to the organisation’s priorities, primarily those pertaining to children’s digital rights. You will also work with colleagues in the Law and Policy Programme to ensure effective, coherent and timely output reviews and policy consultations especially as they pertain to the aforementioned areas. You will be expected to bring and further develop specific areas of expertise, including on children’s rights and digital rights.

Depending on the post-holder’s background and experience, the position will be one of Legal Adviser or Policy Adviser.

About you:

You will have substantial expertise and professional experience in human rights law, including excellent expertise in the area of children’s rights. Good understanding of key technologies, in particular digital technologies would be a strong asset. Good knowledge of international humanitarian law, politics, and/or international relations would be an additional asset. You will have experience in the legal profession, in inter-governmental organisations, human rights NGOs or social movements. You will have demonstrated legal drafting and analytical skills, e.g. through experience in litigation or the application of international law, including international human rights law, international humanitarian law, and/or criminal law. You will also bring strong advisory and communication skills, including with a view to conduct effective advocacy.

You will have demonstrated experience in research and advocacy on human rights issues, as well as experience in or working with the legal profession, inter-governmental organisations and/or human rights NGOs. You will have demonstrated legal drafting and analytical skills, e.g. through experience in the application of international law. You will also bring strong advisory and communication skills, including with a view to conduct effective advocacy.
