Duties

  • Provide legal and administrative assistance to attorneys in the legal office who provide legal services to eligible clients, including active duty military, retirees, eligible civilians, and their family members/dependents.
  • Ensure documents have all legal terminology spelled correctly referring to appropriate guides as needed.
  • Prepare and maintain legal assistance records and reports.
  • Conduct intake of clients to determine eligibility for services, conflicts of interest, and nature of legal problem.
  • Provide appropriate guidance in matters not requiring attorney advice.
  • Review and analyze factual and legal issues on various topics such as family law, consumer law, and tax law.
  • Serve as a Notary Public for the State of New York with responsibility for providing assistance to clients by notarizing pre-prepared documents.
  • Draft legal documents such as wills, trusts, and marital separation agreements that will be subject to final review and approval by an attorney.

  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain certification as a notary public.
  • The incumbent may be required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
  • Appointment to this position is a subject to a two year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR part 315.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service which includes 1) preparing drafts, documents, and/ or other correspondence for review; 2) responding to requests for non-technical information; and 3) utilizing office automation software such as Microsoft Office Suite or PowerPoint to assemble files, maintain calendars, and/or prepare presentations.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Proficiency Required: This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
