FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Department of Exercise Sciences and Recreation invites applications for a full-time Lecturer of Therapeutic Recreation (TR) position beginning Fall 2023. Candidates must have a strong commitment to therapeutic recreation at the under graduate and graduate level.

The Department of Exercise Sciences and Recreation is currently housed in the School of Health Sciences, Human Services and Nursing (HS2N). The School of Health Sciences, Human Services and Nursing currently includes six departments: Exercise Sciences and Recreation; Health Promotion and Nutrition Sciences; Health Equity, Administration, and Technology; Social Work; Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, and Nursing. The school is also home to the CUNY Institute for Health Equity. Departments in the School actively engage with community and government partners to support evidence-based practices and health equity, with a special emphasis on urban populations. The faculty are also strongly committed to high quality teaching and preparation of ethical and skilled health and human service professionals.

The Recreation Education and Therapeutic Recreation programs currently enroll over150undergraduate and20graduate students. Lehman is one of two master’s degree programs in New York State (NYS). Our program attracts students from within and outside of NYS and provides a quality education in the Recreation Education and Therapeutic Recreation discipline and profession. For more information, please visit our website:https://www.lehman.edu/academics/health-human-services-nursing/TheTherapeutic Recreation internship coordinator will be expected to coordinate and facilitates election of Therapeutic Recreation internship sites in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, psychiatric institutions, pediatric and long-term care settings ,and other community health agencies for internship student placements and build and maintain the affiliation agreement between the school and agencies as well as teaching additional undergraduate and graduate courses in the TR programs. Serves as a liaison between faculty and clinical agencies.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Responsible for overseeing the development of the student-training program prior to the internship, which begins in the REC 400 Pre-internship Seminar
  • Responsible for establishing the written agreement between the internship agency and Lehman College, verifying CTRS credentials of site supervisors and student readiness
  • Teach pre-internship and internship seminar as well as undergraduate or graduate level TR and REC courses
  • Teachingmayberequiredduringtheday, evening, and weekends; however, the clinical coordination will account for majority teaching load (at least 24 credit hours) as clinical placement requires a near 35 hour per week commitment
  • Seekand maintain list of qualified sites to ensure site supervisors meet the requirement of the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification
  • Work with the undergraduate and graduate program directors to ensure that all written correspondences with internship placement sites are completed each semester including all up to date affiliate agreements
  • Responsible for rescheduling students when internship sites change and/or warrant re-organization
  • Ensureall students are current with required documents as per the NYS student health requirements and the requirements of the internship sites
  • Ensure all agency contracts are up to date
  • Oversee the collection of internship assessment data to be provided to the undergraduate and graduate program directors
  • Monitorinternshipplacement sites for approvals/denials
  • Troubleshoot placement site issues
  • Reviewinternshipsite evaluations and make recommendations to the undergraduate and graduate program directors based on data
  • Maintain ongoing communications with community partners and work with the undergraduate and graduate program directors.

Qualifications

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.

Bachelor’s degree in area(s) of expertise, and the ability to teach successfully.

  • Master’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation
  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) is required
  • Practical experience in the field of Therapeutic Recreation
  • Evidence of a successful record of college-level teaching experiences
  • Required are demonstrated experience working in a large and diverse program, administrative skills, and the ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution

Preferred Qualifications

  • A doctoral degree, pursuing a doctoral degree, or having a plan to pursue a doctoral degree is preferred
  • Practical experience in the field of Therapeutic Recreation between 5 to10 years of experience
  • Experience advising undergraduate students and supervising practicum work and fieldwork.
  • Excellent organizational skills consistent with internship coordination is also preferred.

Compensation

$84,404 – $88,998

Health Plan Coverage for Employees Hired on or after October 1, 2022 City of New York employees and employees of Participating Employers and their eligible dependents hired on or after October 1, 2022 will only be eligible to enroll in the EmblemHealth HIP HMO Preferred Plan and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.

After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365th day period.

If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day.

Only after the 365th day can the employee participate in any Annual Fall Transfer Period. An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting a HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form to EmblemHealth. An employee, or eligible dependent, must meet certain criteria and the request must be approved by EmblemHealth before the exemption is granted. The HIP HMO Opt-Out Request Form and HIP service area are available on the EmblemHealth website.
