Learning and Improvement Officer

Independent Office for Police Conduct

In the IOPC’s mission statement we say that we want to improve public confidence in policing by ensuring the police are accountable for their actions and lessons are learnt. Portfolio 2 of the IOPC’s current strategic plan focuses on how we improve policing by identifying and sharing learning from our work.

This post holder will have the opportunity to contribute to key learning products and tools utilised by the IOPC. This includes contributing to the development of our regular Learning the Lessons magazine which has been in production since 2007, and acts as a key tool to share learning arising from complaints and conduct matters investigated by the IOPC and by the police service locally. Each issue of the magazine focuses on a thematic area of interest, with recent topics including missing people, young people and roads policing. The magazine brings together interesting case summaries, learning reports, and other non-case related content (e.g. national guidance and expert analysis of emerging practice) to create an insightful learning product which is shared with frontline officers and staff, policy makers and managers, and stakeholders from the community and voluntary sectors and academia. The post holder will have the opportunity to work on all aspects of development of each thematic issue of the magazine.

Alongside this work, the post holder will also be a key advocate and champion for the organisation’s Organisational Learning Recommendations Tracker (OLRT). The OLRT is our internal database for storing data and information related to all learning recommendations developed or issued by the IOPC. Being able to analyse and extract accurate and complete data about learning recommendations is critical to support the IOPC’s work around learning, to allow us to confidently identify trends and themes and to share robust data with internal and external stakeholders. The post holder will complete regular activities to maintain the integrity of the data held in the OLRT and will work closely with colleagues across a range of internal teams to improve our collective approach to recording information about learning recommendations.

Where capacity allows, the post holder will support other work linked to Portfolio 2.
