Background information/Organizational Context

By the end of 2021, the MENA region hosted the largest number of IDPs globally with more than 12.5 million, and close to 2.7 million refugees and asylum-seekers. Operational contexts across the region remain highly complex and insecurity prevails in many countries. Large-scale situations include the decade-long conflict in the Syrian Arab Republic, which continues to drive the largest displacement crisis in the world, and Yemen, which remained the largest humanitarian crisis globally, with over 20.7 million people in need.

The MENA Regional Bureau covers multiple operations as well as several large-scale and complex emergency situations in the Middle East and North Africa region. Within this context, the Bureau regularly engages with a variety of external stakeholders including governments, embassies, media, academia, UN agencies and other international organizations, NGOs, and the private sector.

The external relations team in the Bureau focuses on securing, sustaining and increasing financial and political support for UNHCR and its persons of concern in the MENA region through direct engagement with external stakeholders, support to country operations as well as support to a large number of high-level meetings and missions.

The intern will contribute to the overall responsibilities of the Unit, with a focus on supporting the efforts of the External Relations unit, and UNHCR in the MENA region more broadly, strengthening donor engagement and producing timely, accurate and appropriately messaged information for senior management to best represent and promote the work and impact of UNHCR, particularly with regards to the Syria and Iraq Situations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Keep abreast with developments in the Syria and Iraq situation countries to assist in preparing appropriate reports and updates;
  • Monitor media coverage of developments in the region impacting UNHCR’s persons of concern and prepare regular internal summaries;
  • Assist the External Relations unit in consolidating and analysing information on in order to facilitate the preparation of monthly and quarterly reporting products for the Syria and Iraq situations;
  • Assist in compilation and editing of weekly, monthly, annual/quarterly thematic reports, situations reports etc.
  • Prepare and distribute minutes of the meetings as and when required;
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum qualifications required

  • University degree – preferably advanced – in International Law, Political Science, International Relations, Communications or a related field.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) essential
  • Fluency in Arabic or French desirable
  • Excellent communication and drafting skills
  • Excellent computer skills and knowledge of MS Office 365 applications including SharePoint.
  • Previous experience in an international environment is an advantage
  • Positive inter-personal skills, ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-functional team and environment
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mandate of UNHCR

Eligibility

In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Recent graduate (those persons who completed their studies within one year of applying) or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and
  • Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization.

An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of

UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.

Allowance

Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
