Interpreter (Turkey)

Background

LAW is an independent, non-profit organisation comprised of human rights lawyers working in fragile and conflict affected areas in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. We have a particular focus on gender equality and sexual and gender-based violence, natural resource exploitation, rule of law and accountability, and transformative justice, working to bring justice to those who need it most. LAW’s ground-breaking work has received international and local media coverage, and recognition.

LAW is seeking an English-Turkish interpreter to assist with the implementation of programme work. The interpreter will work closely with LAW’s team as needed in order to executes programmatic outputs. The successful candidate will combine professionalism, integrity and flexibility to support LAW’s team. The candidate will have past experience interpreting for NGOs and international organizations, and will report to a LAW Programme Manager.

Consultancy Description

Reports to: Programme Manager

Duration: 12 months: 01 July 2022 – 30 June 2023

Location: Turkey

Hours: Flexible to be agreed upon assignment 30 days’ work over contractual period Description of Assignment/Key Deliverables:

The Consultant will perform activities as outlined below with accuracy and attention to detail:

  • Interpreting meetings with beneficiaries, beneficiary groups, and other organizations and individuals;
  • Translating written documentation as requested;
  • Preparing for each assignment by reading any provided background documentation made available;
  • Attending briefing sessions to establish approach, identify potential difficulties including language barriers, and reflecting on meetings;
  • Adjusting approach based upon the advice of programme team to ensure that LAW’s engagement is sensitive, proper, and empowering; and,
  • Undertaking training requested by LAW and, where appropriate, contributing to training events organized by LAW.

Experience, Skills and Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor Degree or equivalent in modern languages, interpreting, human rights, international relations, or other relevant subject;
  • Experience of interpreting witness interviews in an NGO, international organizations, or as part of United Nations fact-finding missions, etc;
  • Experience of dealing with vulnerable individuals in a sensitive manner;
  • Fluency in both oral English and Turkish;
  • Excellent written skills in English and Turkish;
  • Flexibility and ability to manage own schedule with minimal supervision and tight deadlines;
  • Team player, with a genuine desire to contribute meaningfully to LAW’s work;
  • Ability to develop strong interpersonal relationships with people from different backgrounds and to build trust efficiently; and
  • Knowledge of Middle East context and culture.
