Functional Responsibilities:

The incumbent will work under the guidance and supervision of the Operations and Administration Specialist in close collaboration with the partner committee, working groups, and the secretariat.

The Interpreter will provide support during RBM missions where a second or third language is required.

  • Reads and rewrites technical documents in specified language, following established rules about factors such as word meanings, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and mechanics.
  • Serves as an interpreter at seminars, speeches, meetings, teleconferences, and symposia, providing consecutive or simultaneous translation between languages.
  • Listens to complete statements in one language, translates to second, and translates responses from second into the first language; expresses either approximate or exact translation, depending on the nature of the occasion.
  • In simultaneous interpreting, renders oral translation of material at the time it is being spoken.
  • Receives briefing or prepares through reading and study on the subject to be discussed before interpreting session.
  • Where required, participate in establishing specialized contacts for the RBM Partnership.

Education/Experience/Language requirements:

Education

  • A Master’s degree preferably in French and/or Portuguese, advocacy, communication, international relations, journalism, law, international development, public administration, public health, social science, or another relevant field is required.
  • A Bachelor’s degree will be accepted with an additional 2 years of relevant experience.

Experience

Required

  • A Minimum of 2 years of experience providing interpretation services
  • Fluent (reading and writing) French and English OR Portuguese and English
  • Experience working in Francophone or Lusophone Africa

Desirable

  • Experience working in or with malaria-endemic countries is an asset.
  • Experience in partnerships, international development cooperation, INGOs, operations, consulting, external relations or public affairs is a distinct advantage.
  • Experience working in public health, especially on malaria, is desirable.

Languages

  • Full working knowledge of English and French OR English and Portuguese is essential.
  • Working knowledge of any another official UN language is an asset.
