I. MSF INTERNATIONAL

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, healthcare exclusion and natural disasters. MSF offers assistance to people based on need and irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.

MSF International is the legal entity that binds MSF’s 24 sections, 25 associations and other offices together. Registered in Switzerland, MSF International provides coordination, information and support to the MSF Movement, as well as implements international projects and initiatives as requested.

II. POSITION BACKGROUND

In 2022, the MSF platforms of directors of fundraising and communications tasked the International Office to create an International Digital Engagement Unit to consolidate expert support to the digital engagement community within MSF.

The international digital data and insights advisor is the first of three new positions to be recruited as part of the Unit.

In the last few years, MSF has been increasing its social media listening capacity in support of the organisation’s communication efforts worldwide. However, demands for support from across MSF’s increasingly decentralised movement have continued to grow. There is a need to monitor key online conversations related to key operational issues, specific humanitarian crises, and security or reputational incidents. We would like to improve and develop similar approaches across the movement to collect digital data and measure the impact of our digital engagement.

II. PLACE IN THE ORGANISATION

The International Digital Data and Insights advisor will be a member of the International Digital Engagement Unit, which is a part of MSF International.

This team reports directly to the International Communication Coordinator and functionally to the International Fundraising Coordinator. It is made up of four people working in different areas of digital expertise and based in different MSF offices. Two more members will be recruited in 2023 to focus on digital capacity building for communication and fundraising professionals, and MSF’s interactions with major digital tech companies.

The International Digital Engagement Unit works closely with different working groups and task forces within MSF’s digital community to support communications and fundraising.

The International Digital Data and Insights Advisor will report hierarchically & functionally to the Head of the International Digital Engagement Unit.

IV. OBJECTIVES OF THE POSITION

The International Digital Data and Insights Advisor coordinates intersectional social media listening efforts and provides strategic advice for measuring the impact of MSF’s digital communications, in close coordination with different taskforces and working groups.

V. MAIN RESPONSABILITIES

Lead international social media listening network

  • Coordinate and maintain the collective use of the shared social media listening tools across the MSF movement. Lead and decide on the technical set-up of those tools for global internal clients in countries where we have activities and at headquarters.
  • Act as the main focal point with external providers for contracts, developments, and maintenance.
  • Deliver expert advice to and act as technical focal point for advanced crisis monitoring users (including using advanced features of monitoring tools).
  • Create and maintain an internal network of social media monitoring leads by identifying experienced MSF digital professionals and providing strategic guidance.
  • When required, get involved in monitoring of reputational or operations-related crises in coordination with social media monitoring leads and others within the organisation.
  • Support the monitoring of crises in coordination with the MSF digital focal points for operational communications and other monitoring leads within the organisation.
  • Coordinates knowledge sharing and learning opportunities for a wide range of internal stakeholders (communications, fundraising, operations, etc) regarding social media listening.
  • Stay abreast of the release of new features and new tools to keep MSF monitoring capacity in line with industry standards.
  • Integrate new ideas and approaches by cultivating relationships with key actors in the digital humanitarian sector: digital consultants, peers in other NGOs, etc.

Improve digital data and insight reporting

  • Lead the regular reporting on digital channels owned by the International Office in coordination with the rest of the team.

  • Share data and insights on a regular and ad-hoc basis as needed with relevant internal stakeholders across the MSF movement.
  • Map the tools used by the MSF digital community to provide internal benchmarks and encourage mutualisation.
  • Participate in different MSF movement initiatives to improve the system of measuring our international and communications KPIs

  • Create, lead and engage an intersectional community of practice related to social media listening and digital engagement data.
  • Contribute to instill a culture of feedback and impact related to data within MSF’s communications network.

Other
