We are seeking to appoint new Board members to join the International Board of Amnesty International. You will bring your skills and talent in either executive or non-executive governance in international organizations, human resources and organizational development, or overseeing strategic and operational risks of organizations basedin multiple geographic locations. You will complement our existing Board members to help us deliver our ambitious strategy and advance our mission and vision of a world in which every person can enjoy freedom, equality, and justice.

The International Board is elected by Amnesty International’s Global Assembly. The role of an International Board member is paid and expenses for travel will be reimbursed.

In this position you will be expected to commit at least two to four days a month or 24 days a year on International Board responsibilities in addition to attending regular International Board meetings, virtual calls included.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic leadership, vision-setting, and governance of Amnesty International ensuring that its mission is upheld across its entities globally
  • Providing high-quality, oversight of Amnesty International’s resources and risks including fiduciary, security, information, digital, reputational and, operational risk
  • Acting as a responsible employer. Ensuring appropriate policies and procedures are in place amidst dynamic organizational change to care for the welfare of IS staff, including safeguarding
  • Appointing and supporting the Secretary General and monitoring their performance
  • Ensuring that all parts of the movement act in accordance with the provisions of Amnesty International’s Statute, the decisions of the Global Assembly, and other global policies and standards
  • Ensuring that Amnesty International complies with its governing documents (the Articles of Association), UK company law, charity law, the Amnesty International Statute any other relevant legislation or regulations in the UK

The above list is indicative only and not exhaustive. International Board members will be expected to perform all such additional duties as are reasonably commensurate with the role.

Experience

  • Able to demonstrate relevant experience and expertise in some or a balance of the following areas:
  • Global governance in international organizations
  • Human resources and organizational development
  • Risk oversight
  • Strategic knowledge
  • Strategic leadership experience in an international and multicultural setting
  • Strong understanding of good governance, the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of working with, or as part of a governing Board
  • Board-level experience, ideally for a non-profit or an organization of a similar size to Amnesty International
  • Experience of working across cultures and an understanding of, and commitment to, equality, diversity, and inclusion

Knowledge and skills

  • Strong leadership skills, ability to motivate staff, and enable management to excel without engaging in operational activities
  • Able to work effectively as a member of a team and to take decisions in line with the strategic vision of Amnesty International
  • Exhibits strong interpersonal and relationship building abilities and is comfortable with public speaking
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of the non-profit sector and experience of governance in an international organization
  • Fluent command of English. The working language of the International Board is English. The ability to work in other official and non-official languages of Amnesty International is also highly desirable
