Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Context:

Background Information

The United Nations Partnerships Division is the focal point for IOM’s institutional relationship and overarching liaison within the United Nations system, coordinating institutional participation in United Nations mechanisms and processes, follow-up to United Nations initiatives and partnerships with United Nations agencies. The Division provides guidance to IOM staff on engagement with United Nations coordination mechanisms, including United Nations country teams. The Division coordinates IOM’s positions and provides guidance on migration governance and policy. The Division is also responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with key platforms and actors, including parliaments, cities and local authorities.

Supervision

Under the direct supervision of the Head of the UN Partnerships Division, the Intern will be responsible to assist the division in developing its engagement strategies with UN agencies and processes and enhancing internal coordination on issues related to external relations of IOM.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

The Intern will have the following duties and responsibilities:

  1. Conduct background research on issues related to UN partnerships and relevant UNprocesses (Sustainable Development Goals, Global Compact on Migration, New Urban Agenda, etc.).

  2. Support in the invitations management process, including in the maintenance and update of the ad hoc calendar.

  3. Assist in the establishment of Standard Operating Procedures in IOM’s engagement with external partners.

  4. Support the development and maintenance of the division’s SharePoint.

  5. Assist in the organization of meetings and webinar related to the UN partnerships.

  6. Assist in the preparation for and participate in internal and external meetings and draft notes for file.

  7. Provide general support to the implementation of the division’s workplan.

  8. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Training Components and Learning Elements

• The successful candidate will also gain experience in working in an international multicultural environment, within the United Nations system.

• Gain experience in organization, management and international cooperation activities

• The successful candidate will acquire technical knowledge in communications in the field of international relations.

• The Intern can also access online training courses at the disposal of all IOM staff.

• The Intern will have the possibility to interact with numerous stakeholders, as well as with the internal and external partners involved in migration discussions.

• The Intern will gain extensive experience working in an international and multi-cultural environment.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

Master’s degree in Migration Studies, Economics, Statistics, International Relations, Social Sciences, Development Studies, International Affairs or a related field from an accredited institution.

Experience

• Experience working with humanitarian and development sectors;

• Experience working with international organization an advantage.

Skills

• Strong computer literacy;

• Excellent critical thinking and writing skills;

• Ability to produce quality work accurately and concisely according to deadlines;

• Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team of colleagues of varied cultural and professional backgrounds;

• Strong communication and diplomatic skills.

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of Spanish and/or French is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Eligibility and Selection

This internship opportunity is available as part of IOM’s Diversity and Inclusion Internship Program. A main condition is that applicants should be citizens of countries which are not part of the OECD-DAC. In other words, this internship position is open to applicants from the Global South. Interns will receive a monthly stipend.

d) are either students approaching the end of their studies and preparing a thesis, or recently graduated, who have less than two years of relevant working experience. e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.

The appointment is subject to funding confirmation.

Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment, accreditation, any residency or visa requirements, and security clearances. Subject to certain exemptions, vaccination against COVID-19 will in principle be required for individuals hired on or after 15 November 2021. This will be verified as part of the medical clearance process.
