Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Context:

Background Information

The United Nations Partnerships Division is the focal point for IOM’s institutional relationship and overarching liaison within the United Nations system, coordinating institutional participation in United Nations mechanisms and processes, follow-up to United Nations initiatives and partnerships with United Nations agencies. The Division provides guidance to IOM staff on engagement with United Nations coordination mechanisms, including United Nations country teams. The Division coordinates IOM’s positions and provides guidance on migration governance and policy. The Division is also responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with key platforms and actors, including parliaments, cities and local authorities.

Supervision

Under the direct supervision of the Head of the UN Partnerships Division, the Intern will assist the division in developing its engagement strategies with UN agencies and processes, and enhancing internal coordination on issues related to external relations of IOM.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Provide administrative support, in particular to the maintenance and update of the ad hoc calendar and the internal processing of external invitations addressed to IOM and directed to the UNPD.
  2. Support in the development and maintenance of the UN bilateral agreements database.
  3. Support the development and maintenance of the division’s SharePoint/ web and Yammer pages.
  4. Provide general support to the implementation of the division’s workplan.
  5. Prepare and assist in organizing coordination meetings and closely monitor follow-up action points.
  6. Track and organize DER data and reports on developments IOM’s participation in UN country teams and regional level coordination mechanisms, and assist in providing background information to the relevant IOM staff in the field and in regional offices.
  7. Assist, as requested, in research to prepare for UNPD presentations and documentation including for topics related to IOM’s integration into the UN system.
  8. Sit in as a note taker and observer in external meetings; international organizations, NGOs and others.
  9. Contribute to UNPD’s reporting on organizational effectiveness as well as any internal capacity-building and information sharing initiatives.
  10. Propose elements for and support with updates to UNPD’s internal webpage/sharepoint/yammer platforms.
  11. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

  • The Intern will also gain experience in working in an international multicultural environment, within the United Nations system.
  • Gain experience in organization, management and international cooperation activities.
  • The Intern will acquire technical knowledge in communications in the field of international relations.
  • The Intern can also access online training courses at the disposal of all IOM staff.
  • The Intern will have the possibility to interact with numerous stakeholders, as well as with the internal and external partners involved in migration discussions.
  • The Intern will gain extensive experience working in an international and multi-cultural environment.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

  • Master’s degree in Migration Studies, Economics, Statistics, International Relations, Social Sciences, Development Studies, International Affairs or a related field from an accredited institution.

Experience

  • Practical experience in multi-tasking, prioritizing, and working independently.

Skills

  • Strong computer literacy;
  • Excellent critical thinking and writing skills;
  • Ability to produce quality work accurately and concisely according to deadlines;
  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team of colleagues of varied cultural and professional backgrounds;
  • Excellent communication and diplomatic skills.

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of Spanish and/or French is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Eligibility and Selection

In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

  1. have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;
  2. are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or
  3. are sponsored by governmental/non governmental institutions and/or academia to work inspecific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.
  4. are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months. e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.

The appointment is subject to funding confirmation.

Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment, accreditation, any residency or visa requirements, and security clearances. Subject to certain exemptions, vaccination against COVID-19 will in principle be required for individuals hired on or after 15 November 2021. This will be verified as part of the medical clearance process.
