Position Title : Intern – Planning & Results-Based Management

Duty Station : Geneva, Switzerland

Type of Appointment : Internship, five months with possibility of extension

Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Context:

Background Information

IOM is transitioning towards stronger Results-Based Management (RBM) practices and systems. The RBM Unit supports and provides guidance on strategic planning at global, regional and country level and is working towards enhanced results reporting across the Organization.

The RBM Unit is situated within the broader Department of Strategic Planning and Organizational Performance, encompassing the organizational units tasked with the implementation of risk management, Monitoring & Evaluation, Results-Based Management and operational compliance.

Under the direct supervision of the Results Based Management Officer, the Intern will support the organization-wide roll out of IOM’s new Strategic Results Framework. The successful candidate will contribute to:

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. The roll out of IOM’s Strategic Results Framework (SRF) in IOM Headquarters, Regional and Country Offices, thus streamlining and strengthening IOM’s institutional reporting.
  2. The review and prioritization of key performance indicators for reporting and project development within IOM.

  3. The development of methodological guidance notes for measurement of these indicators through IOM’s corporate systems, in particular the Project Information and Management Application (PRIMA).

  4. Corporate reports, through analysis of data and coordination with relevant thematic experts.

  5. Perform such other duties as required by the supervisors.

Training Components and Learning Elements

This is an excellent opportunity for the successful candidate to learn about planning and Results-based Management processes within the context of an International Organization. This includes the project cycle, monitoring, reporting and the elaboration of indicators.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

• Enrolled in the last year of / graduated from a Master’s degree, preferably in International Relations, Business Administration, Social Sciences, Development Studies, or a related field from an accredited academic institution.

Experience

• A first relevant experience, either during or after studies, is desirable.

Skills

• Thematic knowledge on migration and/or specific courses, trainings or certifications in Results-Based Management, project management or Monitoring & Evaluation are considered an asset;

• Demonstrated conceptual and analytical thinking abilities;

• Excellent drafting and public speaking skills;

• Dedicated and proactive attitude, good communicator with proven organizational and interpersonal skills and respect for individual and cultural differences;

• Eye for detail, ability to monitor and follow up on pending matters within agreed deadlines.

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of Spanish and/or French is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Eligibility and Selection

In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

a) have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;

b) are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or

c) are sponsored by governmental/non governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.

d) are either students approaching the end of their studies and preparing a thesis, or recently graduated, who have less than two years of relevant working experience.

e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.

Competencies will be assessed during a competency-based interview.

Other:

The appointment is subject to funding confirmation.

Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment, accreditation, any residency or visa requirements, and security clearances. Subject to certain exemptions, vaccination against COVID-19 will in principle be required for individuals hired on or after 15 November 2021. This will be verified as part of the medical clearance process.
