Position Title: Intern
Duty Station: IOM New York
Type of Appointment: Internship Contract, six-month contract with possibility of extension

Organizational Context and Scope:

Background Information

The IOM Office to the United Nations is tasked with maintaining and strengthening IOM’s relations with the United Nations, diplomatic missions, and non-governmental organizations, including through contributing to improving understanding of migration issues, facilitating international policy dialogues on migration, and representing IOM and migration issues in conferences, meetings, and seminars.

Under the direct supervision of the Senior Liaison and Policy Officer in NY and the overall guidance of the Head of the Network Secretariat in Geneva and the Director of the IOM-UN Liaison Office, the successful candidate will work in cooperation with colleagues in the UN Network on Migration Secretariat in Geneva and New York in support of the organization of the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) and other events related to the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM).

Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  1. Work with the Network secretariat on activities and tasks related to the support to the IMRF preparations and negotiations on the Progress Declaration.

  2. Tasks include support in the organization of consultations with the Member States, relevant stakeholders, and UN partners, including support on drafting background documents and agendas, maintaining up to date contact lists, supporting with the coordination of substantive inputs, and the monitoring of interventions in intergovernmental meetings and consultations.

  3. Attend and report on meetings with the Member States and relevant stakeholders related to the GCM and the IMRF.

  4. Support the development of communication materials, summaries, and notes for external dissemination.

  5. Support the Network Secretariat in the follow-up of the IMRF, including reporting the main outcomes.

  6. Undertake all other tasks as may be assigned.

Training Components and Learning Elements:

  • The internship will provide the following training and learning elements:
  • Will acquire technical knowledge in the areas of multilateral consultations, migration, and development.
  • Will acquire skills in event organization, drafting documents for the Member States, relevant stakeholders, UN partners, and external audiences.
  • Will develop liaison skills needed for intra and inter-agency cooperation.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education:

Master’s Degree in Political Science, International Relations, or a related field from an accredited academic institution.

Experience:

  • Academic experience in disciplines related to international relations, political science, anthropology, or sociology
  • Practical experience multi-tasking, prioritizing and working independently.
  • Practical experience in drafting documents, note-taking, drafting summaries, and correspondence.
  • Previous professional experience in the general area of migration and multilateralism will be considered an advantage
  • Experience in liaising with governmental authorities, other national/international institutions, and NGOs is an advantage.

Skills:

  • Excellent research and drafting skills to identify main trends in discussions and large meetings.
  • Good command of Excel and other online applications that can facilitate the extraction of information from various sources in a synthetic and concise manner.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines effectively and collaboratively in a team of colleagues of varied cultural and professional backgrounds.

Languages:Fluency in English is required.**
Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an advantage. Competencies:

Eligibility and Selection:
The Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

a) have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM
programmes and activities;

b) are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations
and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or

c) are sponsored by governmental/non-governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.

d) are either students approaching the end of their studies and preparing a thesis, or have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation.
