Background Information

IOM Bern regularly offers internship positions (2-4 per year)

Supervision

The Intern will work under the guidance and supervision of different IOM Bern employees.

III. Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of Chief of Mission IOM Bern, and in close co-operation with IOM Bern Program Officers, the successful candidate will have the following duties and responsibilities:

  1. Assist in the general operations linked to the preparation and follow up of assisted voluntary returns and reintegration in close cooperation with IOM offices in countries of return, with Swiss return counsellors and counterparts from the relevant Ministries.

  2. Follow-up on cases and files of assisted voluntary returns to specific countries/regions, including administrative follow-up, filing and archiving.

  3. Process information requests linked to the preparation of assisted voluntary return to specific countries

  4. Assist in specific projects in the field of communication, such as preparing background documents and update existing communication material related to Assisted Voluntary Returns programs and other relevant programs within IOM Bern. Other tasks in this area include preparing regular updates of the website and updates of the communication material archive.

  5. Assist in the planning of events, particularly in the field of information dissemination, communication, and networking.

  6. Support of the implementation of Swiss resettlement programs: prepare arrival of refugee groups in Switzerland, ensure information flow between country of departure and arrival as well as with Swiss authorities, prepare pre-departure and post-arrival trainings, prepare reports and statistics, attend related meetings and conferences.

  7. Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the Chief of Mission IOM Bern.

Training components and learning elements

  • Prepare and translate documents related to IOM Bern activities and programs in German, French and English.

  • Attend conferences and seminars related to the work of IOM Bern, including the drafting of summaries/notes.

  • Prepare statistical analysis, narrative reports and communications, as required.

  • Follow-up and collection of relevant press publications.

IV. Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

University degree (Bachelor or Master level)

Experience

Working experience within the field of migration and advantage.

V. Languages

  • Excellent knowledge of German, French and Englisch required.
  • Any other language knowledge such as Italian, Spanish, Arabic or other advantageous.

Notes

Eligibility and Selection

In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

a) have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM

programmes and activities; and/or

b) are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations

and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; and/or

c) are sponsored by governmental/non-governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor; and/or

d) are either students approaching the end of their studies and preparing a thesis, or recently graduated, who have less than two years of relevant working experience.

· Depending on experience and location, IOM provides a small monthly stipend to help offset costs.

Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment, any residency or visa requirements, and security clearances.
