horizont3000 was established in 2001 through the merger of three separate Austrian non-governmental organizations focused on development cooperation. This merger positioned horizont3000 as a prominent actor in Austria’s development cooperation landscape. Governance of horizont3000 is vested in its general assembly and board, comprised of representatives from its Catholic member organizations.
The organization operates primarily from its headquarters in Vienna and maintains regional offices in Nicaragua for Central America and Uganda for East Africa. Additionally, it operates country offices in Senegal and Mozambique. horizont3000 specializes in project and program assistance, coordination, and monitoring, as well as providing technical expertise in low-income countries. Thematically, horizont3000 focuses on three sectors: securing livelihoods, empowering Civil Society, and promoting knowledge sharing. The Regional Office in East Africa is situated in Kampala and oversees projects spanning Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. It will be tasked with managing this consultancy. About Intercultural Communication Training
Every year, the horizont3000 East African office welcomes new advisors to the region. These advisors arrive to support partner organizations across various fields. Originating from Europe, they undergo significant cultural adjustments during their assignment. In response, horizont3000 seeks to provide intercultural training to enhance their cultural orientation, particularly in communication and work behavior when engaging with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. This training aims to equip them with the necessary skills for navigating intercultural work contexts and various life situations.
Currently, horizont3000 is organizing and searching for an experienced consultant or trainer to facilitate a two-day intercultural communication training for the incoming advisors. The training is scheduled for June 19th-20th, 2024.
Objectives
- The Participants improve their cross-cultural competencies in communication and work relations.
- The Participants learn about common difficulties in cross-cultural encounters
- The Participants compare and characterize cultural differences leading to challenges in cross-cultural encounters
- The Participants reflect on the various challenges in intercultural communication and ways of relating to one another and means for coping with these challenges more effectively
- Build Collaborative and Inclusive Team Dynamics: Participants acquire skills for building trust, collaboration, and cohesion within multicultural teams. They learn techniques for resolving conflicts and promoting positive communication, fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment.
- Develop Intercultural Leadership Abilities: Participants explore the role of cultural intelligence and leadership in promoting inclusive organizational practices. They enhance their capacity to lead diverse teams effectively, cultivate intercultural understanding, and facilitate knowledge sharing and learning across cultural boundaries.
Scope and Methodology
Participants for the training are expected to be 6 Technical Advisors and the methodology suggested below should be employed by the trainer.
Participant Engagement Through Interactive Methodologies: The training will utilize highly participative methodologies, such as role plays, group discussions, and interactive exercises, to engage participants actively. These methodologies will enable participants to share their knowledge and experiences, while also providing opportunities for the trainer to impart new concepts and skills.
Customization and Enrichment of Content: The trainer will bring their expertise and relevant resources to enrich the training content, complementing the existing knowledge and experiences of the Advisors The training will be tailored to address the specific needs and challenges faced by the TAs in their intercultural interactions, ensuring its relevance and effectiveness.
Consensus-Building and Learning Enhancement: Suitable methodologies will be employed to facilitate consensus-building among participants, promoting collaboration and collective learning. The training will encourage reflection and critical thinking, allowing participants to explore diverse perspectives and develop shared understanding and approaches to intercultural communication and work relations.
Deliverables
- Training proposal final: after having received feedback and suggestions from horizont3000, the trainer will come up with a final training proposal by 12th June 2024
- Delivery of the training: the trainer will deliver the training as agreed in the proposal on 19th- 20th June 2024 starting at 9:00 hrs and ending at 17:00 hrs. There will be 30 min tea/coffee breaks at 10:30 hrs and 15:00 hrs, and a one-hour lunch break between 13:00 hrs and 14:00 hrs.
- Short report: explaining the main outcome of the training, including handouts for participants, which includes feedback from participants.
Profile for the Trainer
- At least a Bachelor, ideally Master in social sciences, Counseling psychology, or organizational development.
- Profound knowledge in workshop/learning methodologies and didactic
- Experience in using different capacity building methods, especially in workshop/conference contexts and in using peer learning approaches
- Experience in development cooperation and in working in/with local, regional and international NGOs
- Preferably East African citizen (due to the cultural aspects of the assignment)
- Based in Uganda
- Very good intercultural communication skills
- Very good knowledge of English
Budget
The available Budget for this training is Uganda shillings four million ( Inclusive of all costs and taxes)
