ORAM protects and empowers LGBTIQ asylum seekers and refugees globally, creating sustainability and systemic change. Founded in 2008, ORAM is one of the first international NGOs to support and work with, as well as champion for the rights of LGBTIQ asylum seekers and refugees globally. ORAM has a long history of training and building the capacity of refugee-serving organizations, both at the local, national and international level. Our work ensures that LGBTIQ asylum seekers and refugees in a given region are able to safely access services and that their needs are met.

ORAM is in search of an experienced and committed Inclusion Trainer to join our team in Kenya. We are seeking a candidate with a demonstrated background in engaging diverse stakeholders, delivering comprehensive training on inclusion, particularly focusing on individuals with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions (SOGIESC), and adept event planning skills. The primary goal of this role is to facilitate training programs aimed at fostering understanding and inclusion within refugee communities in Kenya, emphasizing the unique challenges faced by individuals with diverse SOGIESC.

Key responsibilities:

  • Deliver in-person training programs on the inclusion of individuals with diverse SOGIESC to a wide range of stakeholders and audiences, including duty bearers, INGOs, NGOs, private sector actors, ORAM partners.
  • Support the development of training and mentorships materials as required, ensuring cultural sensitivity and relevance to the local context.
  • Conduct outreach to stakeholders to assess their training and mentorship needs.
  • Collaborate with LGBTIQ-led Refugee Led to reflect their voices in the training content and engage them in the project.
  • Disseminate and collate training evaluations and produce overview reports of feedback to ORAM’s Inclusion Specialist.
  • Research national and international LGBTIQ materials to create a hub of up-to-date resources for educators in Kenya.
  • Assist ORAM’s Inclusion Program with the development and production of learning materials as necessary
  • Providing regular reports to the East Africa Program Manager and Inclusion Specialist
  • Support in reviewing ORAM tools for conducting GEDI and intersectional context analysis and safeguarding risk assessments and mitigation planning for programs.
  • Support the Program Manager in reviewing the Partner Capacity Assessments tools to ensure suitable partners are engaged.
  • Engagement in advocacy efforts to promote the rights and well-being of marginalized communities.
  • Supporting the forging of partnerships with stakeholders to foster collaborative initiatives and advance inclusion and support to marginalized communities.

Education & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field such as community development, human rights, migration, international development, law, or social sciences (or equivalent combination of education and working experience in a relevant field).
  • At least 3 years’ experience successfully delivering trainings on the topics of diverse SOGIESC inclusion.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of LGBTIQ issues and movements in Kenya and East Africa.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of refugee and asylum seeker context in Kenya and East Africa.
  • Demonstrated experience in advocacy programming.

Essential Requirements

  • A deep understanding of the needs of vulnerable and marginalized asylum seekers and refugees, particularly LGBTIQ people.
  • Hands-on administration experience planning and organizing trainings.
  • Excellent communication skills in English and Kiswahili (oral and written) with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong IT competency, especially with MS Office.
  • Experience in survey methodology using MS Forms, Google Forms, Survey Monkey or similar systems.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Empathy and professionalism.
  • Commitment to the work and values of ORAM
  • A Kenyan national.

  • Ability to work with global staff and stakeholders.
  • Self-starter with enterprising frame of mind.
