BACKGROUND
Islamic Relief Worldwide, Somalia Programme has been operating in Somalia since 2006 and has responded to conflict and drought-affected people through the provision of life-saving assistance. Through our projects, IR has continuously been providing safe drinking water, improving hygienic sanitation facilities, increasing hygiene awareness, particularly among those living in IDP camps; empowering the urban poor and distressed working children, engaging in conflict management and mitigation, and strengthening community cohesiveness and co-existence.
JOB SUMMARY
The Hygiene promoters are responsible to carry out all Hygiene education trainings, WASH-related surveys, sanitation facilities, Hygiene kit distribution, and knowledge surveys on the field level and ensure that the desired goals are achieved with good quality within its due timeframe and other related project activities in Balcad district.
Overall objective:
The general objective is to support the implementation of project activities by establishing strong links with communities, working with WASH committees and ensuring the hygiene sessions are conducted in timely a manner.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in the coordination and implementation of WASH project activities as outlined in the detailed implementation plan (DIP) in line with IRW program quality principles and standards, donor requirements and good practices approach.
- Promote, monitor, survey, and assess the target population in the assigned area at household and group level through daily home and field visits.
- Conduct household surveys and visit in order to identify new participants to the Hygiene Promotion sessions, and Conduct hygiene promotion sessions in the field.
- Arrange thematic focus group discussions, awareness, and hygiene promotion sessions.
- Conduct hygiene promotion sessions within communities, schools, health center, households, distribution points.
- Conduct home visiting to inform and motivate families to improve their hygiene living conditions.
- Animate focus group, giving clear message on good hygiene practice.
- Identify the most appropriate message regarding the target population, and working on it
- Evaluate the necessary material needed for sessions/activity.
- Participate in the identification of beneficiaries for the WASH activities (solid waste management, water supply rehabilitation, distribution of hygiene kits etc.) if requested.
- Promote Hygiene to children to help them acquire safer hygiene behaviors.
- Participate in hygiene campaign, doing shows in schools and at community level.
- Act as a link between the organization and the beneficiaries.
- Support the Project Officer in identification of WASH committees, encourage the participation of female members and lead meetings with committee members.
- Ensure all work is carried out as per the community needs and project standards.
- Forging relationships with key people in the community, stakeholders and community leaders to ensure proper implementation.
- Facilitating sanitation facilities and hygiene kit distribution on a community level.
- Develop trust, tolerance, and cooperation among community members.
- Provide regular updates from the field to the Project Officer;
- Report any incidences related to the protection of IDPs, host communities and other vulnerable groups to the management.
- Report security incidences in the field in a timely manner to the management;
- In close collaboration with the Project Officer establish and update the attendance sheet of WASH committees, meet with female members of the committee, and register new committees selected.
- Ensure timely completion of project activities according to the weekly and monthly plans.
- Perform other relevant tasks as assigned by the Project Officer.
KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY
- Attend WASH training workshops.
- Willingness to conduct pieces of hygiene and sanitation training and mobilization to the target beneficiaries.
SKILLS AND BEHAVIOURS
- Skills related to water, sanitation and hygiene.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently and creatively.
QUALIFICATIONS
- University degree, with relevant experience preferably in public health, or another relevant discipline.
- Proven experience working in a humanitarian/recovery context.
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
- Minimum 1 year of experience working in WASH and development contexts.
- Good knowledge of the English language
- Ability and willingness to travel extensively to the field.
