GiveDirectly

Location: Global, Remote

About GiveDirectly

GiveDirectly (GD) aims to reshape international giving – and millions of lives – by providing cash grants directly to the world’s poorest. The Brookings Institution estimates that $70B of cash transfers would be required to eliminate the poverty gap; the aid sector currently spends $135B each year, much of it on evidence-free interventions. GiveDirectly wants to change that, establishing cash transfers as a benchmark for foreign aid – as the index fund is a benchmark for the financial industry – and in the process accelerating the end of extreme poverty.

GD has raised over $700M since launching in 2011, delivered cash to more than 1 million people, and launched offices in 10 countries. We’ve also supported large-scale, experimental research that indicates strong recipient impact of our programs. As a result, GD has been celebrated as one of the most innovative non-profit companies by Fast Company, while the growing cash transfer movement (and GD’s leading role within it) have been featured in the New York Times Magazine, This American Life, Foreign Affairs, and The Economist.

We’re looking for exceptional talent to grow our collaborative, diverse team. Joining GiveDirectly provides the opportunity to work alongside individuals who come from 21 different countries and speak 69 different languages. We’re actively working toward an equitable and inclusive environment for all team members, and seek candidates who will bring diverse perspectives and experiences to our organization. We recruit from organizations across all industries: our team has hailed from sectors including start-ups, government, consultancies, investment banks, and nonprofits.

Across our global offices, our culture is candid, analytical, non-hierarchical, and fast-paced. We value ability, adaptability, and willingness to learn. We offer competitive salary and benefits, as well as performance-based bonuses.

About this role

GiveDirectly has defined a core “big bet” around expansion into the humanitarian response domain. Our value proposition focuses on speed, flexibility, innovation, and rigor. As part of GD’s humanitarian team, you will hone your operational and project management expertise in a high-growth vertical.

The Humanitarian Manager will play a key role in driving operations across the humanitarian team. Primary responsibilities will include driving project management, coordinating with internal stakeholders, supporting field teams, and ensuring overall operational excellence. The Humanitarian Manager will work closely to support Senior Managers on the team as well as the Humanitarian Director. We are looking for candidates that are highly organized and solutions-oriented, have strong verbal and written communication, and who thrive in fast-paced, unstructured environments.

Candidates must be willing to travel internationally up to 30% as needed. This is a project-based position, which means it is contingent upon funding. This position will have a fixed term of at least 12 months, with the possibility of extending contingent on funding.

This role is fully remote but must overlap with an East Africa timezone by at least 4 hours.

Reports to: Humanitarian Senior Manager

Responsibilities:

  • Program Management

  • Play a core operations role, leading aspects of project management as well as supporting Humanitarian Senior Managers and the Humanitarian Director on other tasks as required

  • Support with designing operational models for new programs, including assessing trade-offs of different design decisions (e.g. targeting, payments, customer service)

  • Track operational and efficiency metrics and report out to internal and external stakeholders

  • Compile research on operational needs, such as registration, legal setup, country office setup, and more, to support entry into new geographies

  • Support with dynamically identifying operational vulnerabilities (e.g. fraud, brand risk, etc.) and creating solutions to de-risk

  • Become an expert in GiveDirectly’s tech systems and processes (Salesforce, Taroworks, Asana, etc.) to support project execution and excellence

  • New business development & partnerships management

  • Support partnership building and partner management by conducting due diligence and desk research for identified fundraising opportunities

  • Conduct desk research & synthesis on humanitarian crises, financial payment systems, and funding opportunities in new countries of interest

  • Coordinate with external stakeholders on discrete projects and tasks

  • Other responsibilities

  • Ad hoc strategy projects (e.g. develop a rapid response strategy and playbook) and other duties in support of Humanitarian and GiveDirectly team goals as needed

Core competencies and experiences

  • 2-4+ years of work experience in a role that required problem-solving and project management
  • Exceptional communication, organizational, and analytical skills
  • Ability to logic through complex operational questions and propose solutions to inform programmatic decisions
  • Ability to manage day-to-day operations while simultaneously building more robust, efficient systems
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a highly independent and self-directed manner, while effectively communicating upwardly about gaps and risks
  • Enthusiasm for fast-paced environments, which may lack a pre-defined playbook for success and involve significant “learning by doing”
  • Prior humanitarian experience a plus
  • French or Spanish language fluency a plus
  • Alignment with GiveDirectly Values and active demonstration of our core competencies: emotional intelligence, problem-solving, project management, follow-through, and fostering inclusivity. We welcome and strongly encourage applications from candidates who have personal or professional experience in the low-income and/or historically marginalized communities that we serve.
