ABOUT FAIRTRADE AFRICA

Fairtrade Africa (FTA) is the umbrella network organization representing Fairtrade-certified Producer Organizations in Africa and the Middle East. It has four (4) regional networks – Eastern & Central Africa; Southern Africa; West Africa; and the Middle East & North Africa. Established in 2005, FTA is a member of Fairtrade International and currently represents 1,354,294 farmers and workers in 660 producer organizations spread across 28 countries in Africa and the Middle East by providing services to them that contribute to the improvement of their livelihoods.

ABOUT THE JOB

Human Rights Advisor works as an expert and coordinator of Fairtrade Africa’s work on Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence (HREDD). Key areas of responsibility include:

  • To manage regional HREDD dialogue project,
  • To advise other projects under the DONUTS programme on human rights issues,
  • To coordinate and contribute to Fairtrade Africa’s participation in Fairtrade-wide HREDD work.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Performance Areas

Project Management

  • Develop the participatory HREDD dialogue concept together with Fairtrade’s Centre of Excellence for HREDD,
  • Write the plan and budget for the project,
  • Coordinate the project implementation,
  • Support rightsholder-driven identification and assessment of salient human rights and environmental issues and their root causes in the participating countries and sectors,
  • Develop dialogue formats and facilitation methods, to ensure meaningful discussions between the stakeholders,
  • Arrange training, organize workshops and dialogue events,
  • Update the HREDD dialogue concept based on participants’ feedback and lessons learned,
  • Monitor the project, supported by the DONUTS programme MEL manager,
  • Write reports (quarterly and annually).

Advise other projects under the DONUTS programme on human rights issues

  • Support and provide advice for these projects on human rights issues such as risk identification and mitigation
  • Provide training for the programme team on issues such as human rights, workers’ rights and HREDD.

Coordinate and contribute to Fairtrade Africa’s participation in Fairtrade-wide HREDD work

  • In collaboration with other FTA staff, contribute to Fairtrade-wide HREDD workstreams: System development, Business services, Advocacy and Capacity Building. This includes concrete collaboration with Fairtrade colleagues from around the world.
  • Coordinate FTA’s participation in Fairtrade-wide work on human rights and environmental risk assessment, which includes
    • expert input to risk assessment plans
    • liaison with Heads of Regions, Product managers, and Fairtrade Centre of Excellence on HREDD
    • support for workshops and surveys with producers
  • Support and provide advice for HREDD-related capacity development work
  • Provide training for FTA staff on human rights and HREDD.

Other tasks

  • Submit necessary monitoring and reports as per required timelines
  • Develop own expertise

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in law or related field.

Experience and Knowledge

  • A minimum of 5 years experience in project management.
  • Experience in supporting ethical and sustainable supply chains.
  • Knowledge of sustainable business practices.
  • Knowledge of Fairtrade standards and HREDD will be an advantage.
