Process Engineer – Holography and Metrology

The Position:

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Process Engineer – Holography and Metrology will own the processes for holographic recording and characterization of optical diffraction gratings. The position is responsible for building, maintaining and improving laser interference fixturing, equipment and facilities inside a Class 10,000 cleanroom. The position is furthermore responsible for methods and equipment for characterizing diffraction grating performance in a high-volume production environment. The Process Engineer will also support new business opportunities and mentor, lead and develop junior engineers, designers, and technicians. The candidate must be a fast learner, strong problem solver, and exceptional communicator. They must have a proven ability to understand complex problems and requirements as described by customers, product managers, and scientific and engineering staff. Due to export restrictions, the candidate must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident. 

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Sustain and improve holographic recording and metrology processes for the production of optical diffraction gratings
  • Develop processes for both new grating designs and yield improvements for existing lines
  • Work in a cleanroom environment using lasers for holographic recording and diffraction efficiency measurement
  • Conduct formal failure analyses for manufacturing processes and equipment
  • Design and implement process monitoring to ensure quality material by detecting out of control conditions
  • Arrange maintenance and calibration of the holography and metrology tools
  • Continuously improve process capability, efficiency and quality
  • Ensure industry best practices are utilized to achieve highest quality output
  • Multitask and support multiple simultaneous projects
  • Train operators and technicians
  • Evaluate, specify and purchase photolithography processing and metrology equipment
  • Conduct Gauge R&R for process equipment and methods
  • Write engineering change orders on existing fixtures and processes to improve designs and correct problems
  • Meet deadlines, sustain superior personal task management, and deliver consistent high performance
  • Occasionally travel to customer and supplier sites as required

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Experience with holographic recording processes and equipment operation
  • Proficiency in failure analysis methodology and documentation
  • BS degree in Optics, Physics, or Engineering
  • Understanding of databases and data analyses
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently
  • Able and efficient with modern documentation, presentation, and collaboration applications, e.g. MS Office
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Capable and self-sufficient in building and testing physical assemblies and apparatus

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in Optics, Physics or Engineering
  • Experience in Design of Experiments (DOE) and Statistical Process Control (SPC)
  • Ability to formally organize and manage technical development projects, i.e. creating work breakdown structures, schedules, and reports
  • Capable in design for cost/ reliability/ manufacturability for optical components
  • Proven track record of successful processes that have supported high volume production
