About Watchlist

Established in 2001, Watchlist on Children and Armed Conflict (‘Watchlist’) is an international network of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) striving to end violations against children during armed conflicts and to guarantee their rights. We strategically collect and disseminate information on violations against children in conflicts to influence key decision makers, in order to create and implement programs and policies that effectively protect children. Watchlist is a fiscally sponsored project of United Charitable, a US-based 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, the official employer of this position. An Advisory Board comprised of leading international human rights and humanitarian NGOs provides general supervision, and Watchlist’s Associate Members frequently collaborate on advocacy initiatives.

Scope of Work and Job Functions

Watchlist is recruiting a team of 6 home-based research consultants to support a project analyzing child protection in armed conflict. The project aims to build a database of national laws and policies relevant to children and armed conflict and to analyze the implementation of the children and armed conflict agenda. Each researcher will cover one of the following countries: Colombia, Philippines, South Sudan, Israel, Ukraine, and Democratic Republic of the Congo. Research activities will entail include identifying, summarizing, and analyzing relevant primary and secondary sources, as well as conducting qualitative key informant research interviews with relevant stakeholders. The position will require between 10-15 days of work, to be conducted between August 1 and October 31.

Education and Experience

The ideal candidate will have 5-10 years of relevant research experience and access to a local network of relevant stakeholders. Candidates should have a master’s degree with a focus on international humanitarian law, human rights, humanitarian response, or another relevant field. Candidates with a PhD are also welcome.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The position requires strong qualitative research experience, including conducting key informant interviews and qualitative data analysis. The ideal candidate will also have knowledge of international humanitarian law, human rights, child protection, and/or humanitarian response in their country of focus, a network of relevant in-country stakeholders, and contextual knowledge of civilian protection in their country of focus. Strong written and oral English language proficiency is required, as well as strong written and oral local language proficiency

Reports to Watchlist’s Lead Researcher

Physical Demands

Must be able to sit and key data into computer and read computer screen.

Work Environment

The ideal candidate will reside in their country of focus, although other candidates will also be considered. Research Consultants will work remotely.
