The Humanitarian Leadership Academy (HLA) is a global learning initiative with a mission to enable people to prepare for and respond to crises in their own countries.

As a dedicated member-neutral capacity strengthening unit hosted within Save the Children UK, we provide quality learning opportunities to suit individuals and organisations, and to strengthen the capacity of the Save the Children movement – ultimately supporting the humanitarian sector as a whole to adapt and become more locally-led.

As part of an exciting new 2022-2025 strategy, HLA is looking to grow its charitable income, and diversify its funding streams across multi-laterals, trusts and foundations, individual giving and engaging the broader Save the Children Movement.

Job Purpose

This is a new role and as the Fundraising Lead for HLA you will lead HLA’s fundraising activity and deliver the HLA charitable (HLA C) fundraising strategy – securing restricted (£780,000) and unrestricted income (£320,000) from different revenue streams and partners (multi-laterals, trusts and foundations, private sector, individual giving and Save The Children Movement).

You will oversee all operational aspects of fundraising and business development for the HLA C including; developing existing and identifying new income streams, building funding opportunities and propositions, managing the charitable income pipeline and partnership activity, and representing HLA at external events.

Working collaboratively with colleagues from across the global HLA team you will identify, develop and nurture new donor and funding partners to enable the successful growth and sustainability of HLA’s work. The focus will be to increase charitable income, enhance business development processes (e.g. pipelines) and support in the development of new innovative income streams.

Main Accountabilities

The Fundraising Lead’s key duties are to:

  • Lead on delivering the HLA C fundraising and business development strategy to support HLA’s exciting new 2022-2025 strategy
  • Secure restricted funding and unrestricted funding via a portfolio of different donors and partners including; multi-laterals, trusts and foundations, high-value donors, individual giving, the private sector and the Save The Children movement.
  • Oversee and lead on HLA C’s business development prospecting and pipeline activity, ensuring we have identified the right mix of funding and funders to meet our income targets, funding gaps and programmatic objectives
  • Lead on proposal development for reactive and proactive opportunities, working closely with counterparts across the HLA, in particular working with Regional/Programme & Learning/Impact teams to support project pipelines and awards and contracts specialists on financial management
  • Own and lead the operational plan for HLA C income generation
  • Develop new, and enhance, existing activities to improve the overall functioning of the HLA C Business Development function in collaboration with other teams, including: pipeline, meetings, and internal go/no go processes
  • Develop and build new funding partnerships across different sectors
  • Identify and explore innovative funding mechanisms to help HLA diversify and increase its income base
  • Lead on the HLA engagement of the Save Movement from a Business Development and fundraising perspective
  • Lead, oversee and monitor KPIs and targets in the fundraising and BD Strategy to ensure its implementation and achievement
  • Support colleagues from across HLA to identify, build and manage relationships with funding partners, and identify new opportunities in the market to support HLA’s Charitable Strategy.
  • Working closely with the Global community team on creating awareness and engagement with our key target audiences and global partners, successfully managing and enhancing the donor/partner journey to increase conversion
  • Lead the development of concept notes, proposals, pitches & capability statements
  • Identify and pursue new opportunities in known & new markets with colleagues from across the team at a regional level, across thematic areas as well as affiliates and delivery partners

Person Profile

Experience

  • Strong demonstrable experience of growing charitable income, working with a variety of donors and partners, with proven ability to generate six figure sums.
  • Experience of writing and developing funding proposals and budgets across different sectors; humanitarian, development, private sector and academia
  • Experience presenting information to varied audiences, including formal presentations, chairing meetings and pitching ideas
  • Experience of leading prospecting and managing pipeline activities, with skills in data-led decision making using a CRM system

Abilities

  • Ability to develop funding partnerships from scratch and develop positive impact relationships that lead to sustainable income
  • Ability to develop new innovative ways of enhancing the business development activities of an organisation e.g. new pipelines, CRM activities
  • Ability to work as part of a high performing team as well as working independently to ensure maximum effectiveness and impact
  • Flexibility and adaptability with the ability to prioritise and reprioritise as new opportunities and challenges arise: willing and able to take the initiative
  • Ability to create order in a complex situation, and support colleagues to do the same

Aptitude

  • Effective in Influencing, negotiation and lobbying skills as well as strong presentation and communication skills – able to articulate a vision, strategy, or idea clearly and concisely via various communication mechanisms and face to face.
  • Strong financial acumen with experience of managing performance metrics (cost per acquisition, ROI, conversion rates), to increase the profitability of products and services and analysing data to inform HLA’s project and programme portfolio
  • An understanding of the charity/ social enterprise/development and/or humanitarian funding environment
  • A demonstrable commitment to the principles of diversity and inclusion and their practical application and integration in the work environment
  • A commitment to Save the Children UK’s aims and core values of accountability, ambition, collaboration, creativity, and integrity

This role can be based internationally outside the UK provided it is in a country with an SC office from which you would be able to and have the right to work – the salary will be based on local pay structures if not based in the UK.

Remote Working:

The majority of SCUK employees are currently working remotely within the UK in line with UK Government guidance. Commencing July 2021 we will transition to flexible and hybrid ways of working (i.e. a mixture of remote/home and office-based working) as social distancing restrictions ease.
