Médecins Sans Frontières, an international humanitarian medical association created in 1971, provides medical assistance to vulnerable populations with crises threatening their survival, mainly in the event of armed conflicts, but also epidemics, natural disasters or exclusion of care. The French section of MSF is present in some thirty countries.

Mission Under the hierarchical responsibility of the Medical Director and her deputies, in collaboration with the OCP nursing care team, the advisor aims to contribute through his/her expertise to the improvement of activities related to her field in MSF projects. He / she will provide support nursing care under their specialty area.

The nursing advisor, as part of the Medical Department, contributes to the implementation of MSF’s social mission through medical leadership, expertise and advocacy. This is achieved by the following:

§ Contribution to medico-operational strategies

§ Providing relevant, context-adapted nursing support

§ Assuring quality improvement and respect for medical ethics in our operations.

§ Developing and supporting operational research and relevant nursing innovation.

§ Advocating internally and externally, based on field needs, experience and research.

§ Providing linkage to MSF and the external nursing community.

§ Working collaboratively with the Nursing Care Working Group and as an ambassador to other working groups as required.

§ Supporting field teams including the care of adult inpatients, outpatients and homecare: it is a medical position (adult ICU, ER, general medicine).

§ Working alongside a team of other clinicians including relevant medical/surgical advisors, IPC, laboratory, pharmacy and other colleagues specialized in relevant fields.

§ In collaboration with the pediatric nursing care advisor, taking part in the nursing care working group within the other MSF operational sections.

Main responsibilities

Provide advice and support to the medical officers of the cell (MedCell) and the field:

o Together with field and cells, actively participate in project development and monitoring by contributing your knowledge in the field of nursing.

o Assist the field and cells in making decisions related to the nursing field and ensure that best practices are put in place considering the specific constraints of each context.

o Ensure that the guides, protocols and tools necessary to ensure quality nursing care are available to the teams and ensure their application.

o Conduct regular field visits and be available for unplanned field support visits in case of emergencies.

o Encourage and support annual training plans for national and international nurse staff.

Responsible for monitoring and analyzing nursing activities:

o Contribute to the definition of indicators necessary for monitoring nursing activities in their area.

o Analyze the nursing data for all the missions within their activities and regularly share the results of the analysis with respective fields, cells and medical department.

o Actively contribute to the Annual Plan of the Medical Department and the annual report of the medical activities.

Responsible for updating knowledge about nursing within their area:

o Develop nursing, hospital and outpatient, protocols, taking into account contexts and level of care in the field.

o Update existing guidelines or protocols regarding nursing content, in collaboration with the pediatric nursing advisor, relevant medical advisors or where relevant the MSF intersectional working group for nursing care.

o Propose new tools and medical devices as needed.

Participate in the transfer of nursing competencies

o Brief and debrief field workers and HQ staff as appropriate.

o In collaboration with the relevant medical advisors, nursing care advisors and the training unit, participate in the delivery of training programs, and update the nursing content of the training as required.

o Working in collaboration with nursing care advisor in the way to harmonize practices.

o Remain current regarding medical literature, innovative context-adapted tools and equipment.

o Participate in the nursing care working group, sharing knowledge and experience with the other MSF operational sections.

Nursing referent/ Representation within and outside of MSF

o In collaboration with Human Resources and nursing advisor team, technical validation of nursing candidates for expatriation, including validation of CVs and assessment of experience/skill level required for placement in the field.

o Discuss and share experience within the movement and in external forums.

o Represent MSF in relevant external meetings.

o Create network of relevant specialists.

Essential Selection Criteria

Nursing degree/diploma.

Minimum 5 years clinical nursing experience, with preferable least 3 years in one or more of the below specialty areas:

  • Adult intensive care units (invasive and non-invasive ventilation)

  • Emergency Department (adults).

Experience in the operating room, resuscitation or as a nursing manager is a plus.

Field experience in developing countries with international NGO or MSF (minimum 18 months field experience or 3 missions).

Languages: Good written and oral skills in French and English (fluent C1 minimum for both).

Desirable Selection Criteria
· Diploma of specialty area (ICU, ER, OT)

· Recent clinical experience/additional qualification in infection prevention and control, palliative care, oncology, wound care, TB/HIV, non-communicable diseases

· Coordination and/or Headquarter experience

· Diploma in Tropical Health or International Health

Contract Permanent contract – Part time (0,6 FTE). Travel abroad to be planned. Position based in Paris (teleworking allowed).

salary conditions: 49.5K€ gross annual salary over 13 months. 22 days RTT/year. Health insurance 100% covered by MSF. Restaurant vouchers with a face value of 9€ (60% paid by MSF). 50% of public transport pass paid.
