Location: Truro with hybrid options or Remote (UK) with quarterly travel to Truro

Main role and responsibilities

Responsible for our UK based public fundraising streams, this role is all about inspirational leadership, developing people and making the most of fundraising opportunities. ShelterBox is at the start of an exciting new strategic cycle with significant ambitions to grow our income. Last year the UK Public Fundraising teams raised approximately 43% of our global income and we are building exciting plans for growth across our individual giving, legacy and community activities.

This role will be responsible for the development and implementation of our strategy across various fundraising streams including Individual Giving, Legacies, Community, Book Club, Regular Giving, and maximizing the opportunity and value of our Rotary partnership within the UK. By championing incredible supporter engagement, developing new supporter journey programmes, reviewing and driving acquisition and retention strategies, and delivering integrated campaigns, you will strengthen these income streams and deliver growth in our sustainable, unrestricted income and audience base.

Reporting into the Fundraising & Communications Director, the Head of Supporter Engagement is a vital member of the senior leadership of the directorate and the wider organization. A strong working relationship with peers in the Head of Fundraising Operations and Head of Partnerships and Philanthropy roles is key to success and unlocking opportunities.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a leader with a strong track record in fundraising. We want someone who is an inspiring leader themselves and, just as importantly, can develop and lead their staff to be the best they can be. This is a key senior leadership role at ShelterBox and we are seeking a strong strategic thinker, who is adept at developing and leading effective functions, bringing together teams and working collaboratively within the UK and globally.

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter and have the ability to manage multiple deadlines, working collaboratively alongside other members of the team.

Experience of a leadership role in the non-profit sector is desirable as is an understanding and awareness of contemporary fundraising trends. This is a great opportunity for someone to join a dynamic and exciting team and play a key role working to ensure that no one goes without shelter after disaster.

Duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Lead the development and implementation of an effective strategy for public fundraising from UK audiences, in line with ShelterBox’s overall objectives and plans
  • Putting supporters at the heart of what we do, maximise opportunities for income generation, retention and audience growth from mass audiences including through new trends, cross selling and effective supporter journeys
  • Ensure we have a full and compelling suite of public fundraising initiatives, including identifying opportunities for innovation and new product development when appropriate
  • Be the strategic lead for our cross functional legacy activity, effectively partnering with departments across the organisation in order to drive and embed a legacy fundraising culture within all teams
  • Along with the Head of Fundraising Operations, identify the barriers and enablers for income growth within your income streams, including to provide a cohesive supporter experience
  • Work closely with the Head of Philanthropy & Partnerships to identify opportunities to collaborate and to feed a pipeline of high-level support
  • Prepare for and manage emergency fundraising mass marketing appeals in response to major disasters
  • Lead and inspire the team, ensuring work plans, objectives and success indicators are in place
  • Along with our Digital team, ensure we are maximising our digital channels to improve supporter engagement and development, and ultimately drive an uplift in income
  • Build excellent relationships with peers within our affiliate network to share knowledge and advice
  • Work closely with the Head of Fundraising Operations and Insight team to ensure we are using data and insight for both performance management and strategic decision making
  • Network with experts (both within and outside the charity sector) to ensure we are continuing to improve and evolve our public fundraising and marketing activities
  • Manage financial and budgeting processes within the team and provide regular reporting as required
  • As part of an emergency organisation there will be times when you will be required to work evenings and weekends at short notice in response to a disaster
  • Represent ShelterBox as required and always work in line with our aims, values and plans
  • Other duties as may be assigned by your line management
