NCA has a long history of presence in Sudan since 1972. Through this long-term commitment NCA has gained valuable credibility as a reliable and results driven organization with an in-depth contextual understanding of Sudan and with capacities for flexible and adaptive programming and thematic complementarity. NCA’s 2020-2024 Country Strategy for Sudan has defined a nexus oriented and multi-sectoral integrated approach within long-term development, humanitarian response and peace with a crosscutting approach towards strengthening civil society and building social cohesion. Since the outbreak of the war in Sudan in April 2023, there have been significant changes in the operating environment. While maintaining the thematic focus and core approaches the geographical focus has been shifted to areas that are currently accessible to NCA and national partners. A coordination office has been established in Port Sudan with a field office in Gedaref and with support to partners and their activities in White Nile, South and North Kordofan.

NCA is seeking a Head of Sector for WASH. In this role you will contribute to the development of NCA’s WASH program in Sudan. You will ensure that this is implemented in an environmentally friendly manner with a visible impact for the people in need. In addition, you will ensure accountability and appropriate technical quality for the WASH program portfolio, and make sure projects are in line with international and national standards, as well as NCA’s programmatic frameworks.

The successful candidate is expected to use their skills, knowledge, and experience with WASH in order to support the country program.

The duty station is Gedaref, Sudan, with extensive travel in Sudan. The contract is for 12 months with a possibility for extension. Please note that Sudan is classified as a high-risk area and is a non-family duty station. This position is advertised nationally and internationally. Terms and conditions will apply accordingly.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Programmatic implementation and development:Lead NCA Sudan’s WASH team. Take initiative and contribute to and/or facilitate processes for development of new, greener, and more durable NCA WASH programming in Sudan. This may include development or introduction of new concepts, components or technology, or improvements of existing activities including with respect to green technology and early recovery activities.
  • Technical monitoring: Verify and quality assure NCA and partners’ WASH-related project documents and actual implementation through feedback mechanisms including reviews, meetings, and field monitoring.
  • Capacity support and development: Provide WASH technical and management support to NCA and partners’ WASH staff in Sudan, and take the lead on facilitating capacity development initiatives for NCA and partner staff.
  • Networking: Coordinate with relevant stakeholders, positioning NCA as key leading WASH response agency, preventing duplication of efforts and maximizing synergies of efforts. Keep updated about the development of the WASH sector in Sudan, by actively engaging in relevant coordination mechanisms and sharing information with the wider project team. Keep updated on new approaches, tools, and studies by engaging with other WASH actors both in Sudan and globally, and through relevant publications and information channels.
  • Other assignments: You may be assigned additional tasks depending on the situation and your work load.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in WASH programming from humanitarian settings
  • Experience with designing and implementing projects utilizing green technologies, such as, but not limited to, solarization is preferable.
  • Proven experience in working with partners in a humanitarian and/or development context is desirable.
  • College/university degree in engineering, public health, or similar. Specialization in water and sanitation is preferred.
  • Proven experience in conducting trainings and capacity development.
  • Fluency in verbal and written English is required, written and verbal Arabic skills is an advantage.

  • Willingness to travel to conflict and post conflict settings, as the situation allows.
