Mission & Context

Médecins Sans Frontières is an international independent medical-humanitarian organization, which offers assistance to populations in distress, to victims of natural or man-made disasters and to victims of armed conflict, without discrimination and irrespective of race, religion, creed or political affiliation.

The position belongs to the Communication and Fundraising department, whose mission is to maximize engagement with audiences globally, in the field, and in Switzerland and speak out about populations in distress and ensure social and financial support to MSF’s social mission.

You will be leading the effort to provide engaging and personalized experiences to our audiences in the field, in Switzerland (up to 3 languages), and globally, reaching people via social and traditional media.

We are looking for a person with vision and expertise about public engagement, a proactive team player, who is enthusiastic and eager to put his/her talent at the service of our humanitarian mission.

Main Responsibilities

Strategy

  • Design integrated public engagement strategies aligned with objectives of the Communication and fundraising department, in synergy with particularly digital engagement, creative content, and fundraising teams, as well as with MSF association, MSF representative in Switzerland, and General Direction when relevant.
  • Design media engagement strategies in order to disseminate efficiently MSF’s positioning to relevant audiences in Switzerland (in Geneva and Zurich, as well as support when required providing support in Ticino).
  • Design media engagement strategies in order to disseminate efficiently MSF’s positioning to relevant audiences globally, via the Geneva media hub of international global media, in relation with relevant teams in and outside of the department.
  • Supervises strategical stewardship of media relations in Switzerland and the activities related to it (field visit, press briefings…), as well as particularly media partnerships.
  • Lead the process of definition, implementation and monitoring of KPIs for the Unit and ensure comprehensive statistics and reports to identify risks, opportunities and priorities.
  • Supervises editorial management of MSF Suisse/Schweiz twitter handles, including engagement metrics. Ensures social listening about topics relevant for MSF’s position in Switzerland is performed in a timely manner, in close relation with the Digital Engagement Unit.
  • Develops strategies of participation in/organisation of events in order to support MSF’s positioning across Switzerland and provide opportunities for MSF to engage with its supporters, in the frame of OCG’s Strategic plan 2020 – 2023. When relevant in synergy with media engagement.
  • Proposes and develops partnerships with relevant stakeholders to support MSF’s positioning in the Swiss public and promoting direct contact between MSF and its audiences in Switzerland.
  • Ensure his/her team delivers on public engagement strategies, and integrated campaigns with multiple objectives.

Networking

  • Contributes in coordination with other units of the department to the development of the network of external stakeholders and partners in order to meet the units objective in an efficient and timely manner.

Management

  • Manages a team of 5 members based in Geneva and Zurich.
  • Proposes the unit’s annual expenditure budget based on a workplan with set objectives. Ensures budget monitoring.
  • Leads the yearly plan of action process for the unit.
  • Provide team members with necessary support to ensure achievement of priorities;
  • Be responsible for the HR cycle of the people in the unit (updating JD’s, recruitment, induction, support, evaluation, development, etc.)
  • Foresee future needs and generate capacity to fulfill future institutional challenges;
  • At the request of the Director of the Department, takes charge of any specific project.

Your Profile

Education

  • University degree in communication, journalism, public relations or equivalent.

Experience

  • 5 years of professional experience in developing and managing public relations and engagement strategies.
  • Team management experience
  • Previous experience in the humanitarian sector an advantage
  • Track record in conceptualizing, managing and developing public engagement strategies.

Languages

  • Good command of German and English.
  • French highly desirable.
  • Italian would be an asset.

Terms of Employment

  • 80%-100% (32h-40h/week)
  • Open-ended contract
  • Working place : Zürich
  • Ideal start date: September 1st, 2022
  • Gross annual salary for a 100%: from CHF 116’449.- to CHF 130’657.- (salary commensurate with equivalent experience and internal salary grid)
