We are currently recruiting a Head Of Philanthropy to join our Philanthropy team, to be based in the USA, ideally within commuting distance of the Washington DC office; this will be a remote based position.

About the opportunity

RI is thrilled to announce, we are searching for a Head Of Philanthropy, to lead on income generation, from a diverse portfolio of donors. These are major donors (High Net Worth Individuals (HNWI), family foundations, corporations and mid-level donors.

Working closely with the CEO, Senior Management Team and the Board of Trustees, you will identify new prospective donors and lead on the development of a long-term strategy for income growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a strategy to deliver philanthropic and wider fundraising income to support RI’s mission.
  • Together with the Senior Major Donor Manager, create and implement a robust pipeline of new prospects including cultivation and stewardship strategy.
  • Design and deliver high profile events to attract new supporters whilst championing RI’s vision.
  • Work across the organisation and with communications colleagues to develop compelling cases for support which will highlight RI’s work and need for funding.
  • Line Management of the Senior Major Donor Manager.
  • Collaborate with Communications team to ensure compelling content and stories from RI’s countries of operation, are gathered and compiled to support specific fundraising outputs.

Stakeholder Management

  • Work directly with the Senior Management Team and Board of Trustees to identify and access new potential networks and opportunities.
  • Develop and manage a portfolio of key relationships with major donors ensuring robust donor development plans are in place to maximise giving.
  • Partner with SMT to develop an organisational culture of philanthropy that recognises philanthropy’s importance and impact.

Financial management

  • Agree the annual financial budget and targets for the philanthropy team.
  • Manage monthly management accounts and reforecasts.
  • Undertake financial and operational reporting, including ensuring appropriate reporting to the Board of Trustees.

About you

You will be an experienced and innovative philanthropy leader, with a good understanding of the development and humanitarian aid sector.

As a frontline fundraiser, you will have proven experience of securing new partnerships and income from major donors as well as having solid knowledge about all other major income generating streams.

You will work closely with the Communications Team, to create a range of tailored proposals for major donors, and to create a strong case for unrestricted support.

As an organization who provides immediate humanitarian assistance, in addition to meeting the longer term needs of communities in crisis, you will need to be flexible and adapt work plans when large humanitarian emergencies take place.

Your career will have focused on the fundraising market in the USA with knowledge of a secondary market outside of the USA being desirable.

You will need experience in developing and delivering on multiyear fundraising strategies, have strong financial/budget management background and excellent people management skills.

You will bring the following experience and skills.

  • Educated to degree level, or equivalent experience;
  • Thorough understanding of the USA philanthropic giving landscape, with particular expertise in major giving.
  • Strong change management skills with the ability to maintain team support and engagement.
  • Excellent strategic development, planning and budgeting skills to drive continued growth and ensure targets are met
  • Ability to create multiyear fundraising and engagement strategy
  • Capable of building strong relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Able to plan and manage complex projects and relationships working collaboratively across a variety of internal and external stakeholders

Desirable skills

  • Experience of using CRM systems for relationship building and financial planning
  • Understanding of fundraising landscape in the UK, Europe or any other regions.
