Head of People and Operations

Women for Women International (WfWI) is an international NGO that helps women survivors of war to rebuild their lives. We believe that with access to rights, education and resources, women can lead change towards peaceful and stable societies. Since establishment in 1993, WfWI has worked with over 500,000 women in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq, Kosovo, Nigeria, Rwanda and South Sudan. The UK office was established in 2006 and has steadily grown its programme funding from grants from various sources, including governments, trusts and foundations, companies, and individuals.

We are seeking a Head of People and Operations to support our transformative work with the most vulnerable women in war-torn countries.

You will lead on delivery of Women for Women International-UK’s strategic and operational HR objectives and provide the full range of HR guidance and advice to managers and employees. As the first point of contact for all employee related matters, you will ensure that all staff are aware of, and operating to, both our global and local HR policies and procedures, and that these are being implemented consistently across the organisation. The Head of People and Operations Manager and delivers our people services in compliance with the UK employment law and best practices, to support our employee life cycle. You will nurture a culture that fosters performance and wellbeing of our staff members and serve as a trusted advisor to line managers.

You will help support our people managers so that they can confidently and consistently address any staffing issues that may arise, alongside managing routine employee-employer relations. You will coordinate and administer regular HR activities whilst contributing to a range of new and diverse HR projects, both for the UK team specifically and as part of the global HR function. You will spearhead new policies and practices to promote staff wellbeing and engagement, as well as shape and direct our working culture, to ensure that Women for Women International is truly a great place to work and develop both personally and professionally.

This position is also responsible for day-to-day operations including compliance with internal policies and procedures, asset management and general troubleshooting. Creating an enabling environment, promoting best practice and removing barriers that prevent WFWI-UK staff from reaching their full potential is essential to our success and so this is an important aspect of the Head of People and Operations remit and makes up around 30% of the role, including line management of the People and Operations Officer.

This opportunity will suit someone who has experience of working in an HR team or function, with a strong understanding of people management, and experience of dealing with employee relations. The ideal candidate will be highly organised, an outstanding communicator (both oral and written) and understand the importance of building strong productive relationships across a diverse group of colleagues. You will be an excellent multi-tasker, with exceptional attention to detail, and you will be calm and focussed in high-pressure situations. You will have an enthusiastic and flexible approach to work, strong emotional intelligence, and a genuine passion to make a difference to our work and our team.

Reporting to: Managing Director – Finance, Operations & Culture

Proposed Start date: ASAP

Location: Primarily remote working with some expectation of work from the

office based in Borough, London

Working Pattern: Full time, 35 hours per week

Salary Level: £45,000 per annum

Abilities Required

Essential

  • CIPD qualified (or working towards), or equivalent HR work experience
  • Demonstrable people management expertise, and experience in handling complex and sensitive employment relations
  • Knowledge of UK employment legislation and best practice
  • Office/ Administrative experience

Desirable

  • Office management experience, including managing 3rd party providers
  • Experience of a fundraising environment
  • Experience of managing staff members
