The project:

The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) is a disaggregated data collection, analysis, and crisis mapping project. The ACLED team conducts analysis to describe, explore, and test conflict scenarios, and makes both data and analysis open for free use by the public. ACLED material is regularly used to inform journalism, academic research, and public discourse on conflict, and to support the work of practitioners and policymakers. ACLED is the highest quality and most widely used real-time data and analysis source on political violence and protest around the world.

The role:

ACLED is recruiting a Head of Operations to oversee ACLED Operations and Human Resources. At ACLED, Operations encompasses information technology, procurement, logistics, digital office management, and safety and security. The Head of Operations will manage these areas and teams, as well as provide strategic guidance on their further development.

This is a full-time position. For coordination purposes, the selected candidate will need to work either EST or CET work schedule. This position can be done from any location with reliable internet service (provided the work schedule noted can be accommodated). The start date for this position is October 2022. Specific roles and responsibilities:

  • Serve as a key advisor to the Executive Team on operational and administrative matters, especially related to the Human Resources, Administration, IT, Procurement & Logistics, and Safety & Security;
  • Evaluate and provide input on the administrative and operational goals, strategies, and structures of these departments;
  • Direct Human Resources activities;
  • Direct all operations including information technology, procurement/logistics and digital office management;
  • Direct and develop ACLED safety and security policies and procedures;
  • Manage certain compliance related issues and all insurance programs;
  • Support collaboration between Finance, HR, IT, Operations and other departments where required;
  • Support strategic development and execution;
  • Other tasks as required by leadership.

Skills and competencies:

  • Minimum of eight (8) years overall of relevant experience working in a non-profit;
  • SHRM (or similar) certification (desired);
  • Experience implementing/administering software and IT systems;
  • Experience managing safety and security procedures and policies at an organization similar to ACLED;
  • Experience in a remote/virtual office environment;
  • B.A. or B.Sc. in a related field (or equivalent proven experience);
  • Fluency in English;
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision to meet deadlines and produce high quality results in an environment with competing priorities and deadlines;
  • Strong planning, coordination, and management skills;
  • Good judgment and extremely high attention to detail;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
