Mercy Corps works in places of transition, where conflict, disaster, political upheaval, or economic collapse present opportunities to build more secure, productive, and just communities. Mercy Corps has worked across Iraq’s 18 governorates since 2003, implementing relief and development programming, more than a third of which has focused on the specific needs of refugees and displaced persons. Mercy Corps Iraq current goal is to work with new and existing civil society, public and private sector partners to meet immediate and long-term needs by strengthening communities’ ability to rebuild amidst increasing crisis. Mercy Corps Iraq focuses on (1) a relief-to-resilience pathway to meet the needs of conflict-affected communities leveraging agency expertise in conflict management and civil society development (2) a humanitarian response that empowers conflict-affected populations to meet their own needs (3) partnering with conflict-affected adolescents to address their diverse needs, promoting leadership and linkages with civil society.
General Position Summary
The Guards works to assist, provide, protection and support to the activities of Mercy Corps in all the working areas. The Guards will adhere to all MC safety rules and follow the guidelines to provide security and support as it’s required by the MC.

Essential Job Responsibilities
• To assure the security and safety of personnel and property at the Mercy Corps guesthouse or office to which assigned by the immediate supervisor, during all of the hours of working shift.
• To ensure that unauthorized personnel are not permitted to enter MC building or compound(s).
• In the event that no MC personnel are present, to ensure that the house, office and compound remain secure against theft or damage and that persons who are not authorized do not enter the compound and /or remove any items.
• In the event of security problems, to assist fully in the security of the compound, office and house for safety of property and personnel and if necessary to assist in the evacuation of personnel and property if directed by the immediate supervisor.
• To prevent unauthorized removal of property of belongings of MC (or MC personnel) from the house, office, compound or from vehicles parked outside the compound.
• Where necessary and requested by MC personnel, assist in removing persons, non-violently from the compound.
• To ensure that during the working shift, the watchmen remain able to check the gate and compound fence areas to ensure that unauthorized persons enter the compound.
• To ensure that at all time the gates for persons and vehicles remain closed and bolted, except when allowing permitted persons or vehicles to enter the compound and that the gates are then immediately closed and bolted.
• To assist in the general operation of the house and office in such items as turning on water pump (make sure water tanks full at all times), assisting in loading and unloading vehicles if needed, assisting in general maintenance, assisting in running the generator and maintenance it, etc.
• Where international staff of MC may be required to be accompanied in the street or to other location, or to border, the watchmen shall accompany and assist the international staff for security reasons – though they shall ensure that the compound is securely locked and where possible alternative staff are person and instructed to secure the compound, house and office.
• Provide advice to international staff on local costs, local practices, courtesies, customs and regulatory requirements.
• Strictly follow the watchmen duty schedule each month.
• Understand that staff security is the most integral part of MC operations in Iraq thereby immediate termination while found asleep during the duty hours.
• Perform other work related duties and responsibilities as may be reasonably requested by the head of office.
• To at all times respect and implement the principles, directions and security requirements of MC.
• Represent Mercy Corps in a professional manner.
• Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None
ACCOUNTABILITY: Accountable to all Mercy Corps Policy and Staff Safety
Reports Directly to: Safety and Security Officer
Works Directly with: Security, Operations and all Program staff

 


Qualifications & Preferred Skills

Knowledge and Experience
• Experience working with NGO organizations preferred.
• Ability to work as a part of team.
• Ability to work with people from different backgrounds and nationalities.
• Valid driver’s license and experience driving 4X4 vehicles.
• Must respect and adhere to all safety rules.
• Basic understanding of English and fluency in all local languages is required.
• Knowledge of routes, duty stations, projects areas, the NGO and diplomatic community is required.
Success Factors
• Conscientious with as excellent sense of judgment.
• Ability to work simultaneously on multiple tasks.
• Willingness and ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people.
• Ability to work as part of a team and coordinate with project personnel.
Computer literate and strong organizational skills.
