The contract will last 20 days between 6 May 2022 and 15 July 2022.
At the completion of the contracted days, the consultant will have helped produce/execute the graphic elements and design of a study to assess the implications of new emerging technologies for the humanitarian system and climate change and humanitarian action.
The graphic designer will work in close consultation with a focal point in the Policy Branch and the schedule of delivery will be dependent upon the actual completion of source material by Policy staff. The graphic designer will be engaged “on retainer” and will work remotely, receiving files electronically for formatting from the Policy Team.

Duties and Responsibilities
In 2022, OCHA Policy Branch will finalize the two reports- emerging technology for humanitarian action and climate change and humanitarian action. These reports include advanced graphic visualizations of the UN’s work in technology and climate, graphic analytics of the capacity of the humanitarian operating environment to absorb technical solutions and respond to climate events, and illustrations of emerging technology applications (artificial intelligence, machine learning, UAVs, blockchain) for humanitarian
action. Additionally, the technology report includes over two dozen case studies and chapters that will need original artwork and the climate change report will include scenarios that will need illustrations. Due to further consultation with stakeholders and key partners, there have been changes and recent developments in the technology and climate change report. In this regard, the graphic visualizations on both reports will need to be updated.
Objectives and Tasks
In close consultation with the Policy Team to determine the exact requirements of the publication, the consultant for 20 days between 6 May 2022 and 15 July 2022 will:
• Actively participate in discussion with the editorial team in the graphic design of the report, analytical
visualizations, and creation of original art.
• Assist in the graphic design of all components of the report- print and electronic versions, including:
- Manage and develop data visualizations for trends, organigrammes, concepts,
- Develop and design graphic elements for inclusion in online platforms e.g. OCHA website or
microsites. - Create all original artwork/illustrations for the cover, chapters and case studies and scenarios.
- Assist in the layout of the report.
Qualifications/special skills
Academic Qualifications: A first-level university degree in graphic design
Experience: At least 10 years experience designing complex and original graphics, including charts, logos, covers. Prior direct experience working with data visualization for major publications. Prior experience working with OCHA is highly desirable, especially prior experience in the publication of OCHA material and flagship reports.
Language: Fluency in English, written and oral, is required
