Grant Specialist

Job Overview:

The Grants Specialist is a new role within the IRC in Denver team that will work to leverage public and private funding opportunities for the IRC in Denver office through prospecting, proposal writing, grants management and reporting, and sub-award management. As a key member of the Development team, the Grants Specialist will be responsible for conducting pre- and post-award activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grants consistent with IRC policies and in accordance with requirements of federal agencies, state and local agencies, private foundations, and corporations. Work will be performed in collaboration with the IRC in Denver’s leadership, development, finance, and program staff, as well as IRC Headquarters’ revenue, grants, and business development teams.

Major Responsibilities:

Pre-Award Grants Management

· Support proposal development and submission, working closely with the IRC in Denver Executive Director, Deputy Director, Development Manager, Senior Finance and Budget Manager, and local program staff, and IRC HQ staff to ensure on-time submission of high-quality proposals.

· Prepare supporting documentation, write key proposal sections, prepare budgets in both IRC and donor-required formats, coordinate input from key team members, and edit and integrate all content into coherent, compelling proposal narratives.

Post-Award Grants Management

· Work closely with the Deputy Director, Senior Finance and Budget Manager, and program staff to prepare interim and final reports to donors.

· Coordinate grant opening and closing meetings for assigned grants.

· Update grants management tracking and donor tracking systems on an ongoing basis; ensure the IRC in Denver leadership team is regularly apprised of grants-related activities and has access to accurate data.

· Maintain accurate and detailed electronic contract and grant files for each funded program with consistent documentation standards.

Prospect Research

· In collaboration with the Development Manager, work with the IRC in Denver leadership team and program staff to identify fundraising priorities and conduct prospect research on potential public and private donors.

· Analyze grant opportunities and suitability for the IRC in Denver based on alignment, capacity to respond, and impact on programs and operations; participate in go/no go decision-making process.

· Support preparation of letters of inquiry, proposals, budgets, and reports to potential local foundation and private institutional donors to solicit restricted and unrestricted private funds.

Other

· Balance competing priorities with grace, and consistently deliver high-quality products when against a tight timeline.

· Support program staff and development team with grants management tasks and coverage as needed.

· Other related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Education

· Bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism, English, or a related field; may be substituted with equivalent number of years of relevant work experience.

· Certification or record of continuing education or coursework in grant writing, proposal development, and/or fundraising a strong plus.

Work Experience

  • At least one (1) year of professional work experience in grant writing and fundraising is strongly preferred.

  • Outstanding interpersonal communication, relationship-building, diplomacy, and networking skills; ability to effectively build internal and external relationships with colleagues at all levels.
  • Project management experience or skills, with a demonstrated ability to create work plans and help a team complete its tasks on deadline.
  • Excellent writing, research, and organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated to plan, prioritize, problem solve independently, and produce quality work products.
  • Self-directed with strong judgement and the ability and willingness to work well within a team with varying levels of experience with grants.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; fluency in English required.
  • Capable of adapting quickly to change and applying new information and skills to work duties.
  • Demonstrated success working and communicating effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) required; experience in online grant application and management portals is ideal.
  • Program design, program implementation, and/or monitoring and evaluation experience a plus.
  • Familiarity with the non-profit and philanthropic landscape in metro Denver and Colorado a plus.

Working Environment

  • A combination of standard office environment and remote work.
  • Occasional domestic (non-local) travel required; up to 10%.
  • Occasional weekend and/or evening work required.

Compensation and Benefits: This is a full-time, regular position classified as a non-exempt and eligible for overtime under state and federal law. Starting compensation is $21.97 to $25.85 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. We offer a comprehensive and highly competitive set of benefits.
