Position: Nutrition Assessment Specialist

Contract duration: 1 year

Starting Date: 1 February 2023

Location: Geneva or TBD, with frequent field missions (up to 40%)

POSITION PROFILE

Under the supervision of the REACH Public Health Unit Manager and the Nutrition and Health Senior Assessment Specialist, the Global Nutrition Assessment Specialist (GNAS) is responsible for improving the technical capacity of the organisation in nutrition and health assessments and analysis. Through in-person deployments and remote support, the GNAS will help in improving quality of programmes related to nutrition and health – across REACH country missions, work with country missions’ counterparts to identify issues and information gaps, and design and implement guidelines and tools that address these same issues and gaps. The GNAS will also be responsible for capacity building in nutrition and health both at country and global level, through training and mentoring, as well as to strengthen engagement with technical external stakeholders operating in this space.

The ideal candidate would have i) at least 3-5 years of experience in humanitarian settings; ii) especially in nutrition AND mortality data collection and analysis (i.e. not program implementation); iii) have a SMART Survey Manager Certification iv) preferably have experience with IPC Acute Malnutrition analysis, v) good command of statistical software, such as R, STATA, SPSS and/or EpiInfo; vi) willingness to travel frequently to remote duty stations.

FUNCTIONS

  1. Improve scope and quality of REACH nutrition and health data collection and analysis

    1. Provide technical review, advice and surge to country missions for data collection and analysis in health and nutrition and ensure activities in the field comply with global standards and feed into key analytical processes, such as the Integrated Phase Classification Acute Malnutrition (IPC AMN)
    2. Support the creation of guidance documents and tools based on best practices and global standards to facilitate nutrition and health data collection and analysis
    3. Systematically build the capacity of REACH staff in nutrition and health data collection and analysis, through training design and delivery, including the enrolment of REACH staff into external trainings, such as IPC, SMART, etc.
    4. Facilitate the work of HQ Public Health Unit as part of the team, and support the facilitation of the REACH Public Health Unit Community of Practice (CoP)
    5. As necessary, provide surge support to countries for primary data collection, trainings, or other purposes related to the work of the REACH HQ Public Health Unit.
  2. Strengthen REACH engagement with external stakeholders

    1. Participation and support to country missions in engagement with in-country Nutrition and Health Clusters
    2. Participation and support to country missions in engagement with in-country IPC AMN workshops in countries of concern – including but not limited to workshop participation, mission capacity building, data processing, and coordination with HQ teams or relevant external actors.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent academic qualifications, including a university degree (preferably a Master’s degree) in a relevant discipline (Public Health, Nutrition, Epidemiology, Statistics, etc.);
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in nutrition and health data collection and analysis
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of field experience in humanitarian crises
  • SMART Survey Manager Certification is required
  • IPC AMN Level 1 Certification is preferred
  • Demonstrated experience with a variety of nutrition assessment methodologies (SMART, SQUEAC/SLEAC, Barrier Analysis, Mortality assessment, Link NCA, etc.) is a strong asset.
  • Demonstrated experience with nutrition programming (CMAM, IYCF, etc.) is a plus
  • Ability to conduct quantitative analysis with statistical software such as R, STATA, SPSS and/or EpiInfo is necessary, with R a strong preference
  • Willingness for short- medium- term deployments for technical country-mission support.
  • Fluency in English required, proficiency in French is considered a strong asset.
