Are you a current student or recent graduate who is considering a career in the humanitarian field? Are you interested in learning more about working in complex humanitarian environments?

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is looking for an intern with interest in humanitarian action to be an integral part of the Global Humanitarian Access and Advocacy teams in the Washington DC office. The responsibilities will generally include desk research, project management support, editing, writing and attendance to meetings in the DC area. Interns will have an opportunity to learn more about humanitarian activities, policy, and engage directly with our colleagues based in more than 30 different countries. The intern will be reporting to the Global Humanitarian Access Advisor and will support research for a USAID-funded grant to improve humanitarian access around the world.

The intern will be spending 15-30 hours per week at the NRC USA office in Washington DC, unless a remote location is agreed upon. Ideal candidate would be able to commit for up to 1 year (or the two academic semesters of Fall 2022 and Spring 2023).

NRC USA will provide the intern with a workstation and cover phone and travel expenses incurred. The internship position is paid.

What you will do

Researching and writing

  • Conducting desk-based primary research on humanitarian topics
  • Reviewing and synthesizing policy and academic literature
  • Drafting, editing, and reviewing research papers and advocacy materials
  • Drafting summaries/notes for meetings/conferences
  • Reviewing literature and fact checking

Other Support

  • Providing logistical support for in-person and virtual events, including preparing papers and agendas, and participating in private and public meetings/conferences
  • Performing other administrative duties as necessary

  • Current student or recent graduate (as of 2020) of a master’s degree in a relevant discipline such as political science, international relations, human rights and international development, with interest in gaining experience in the humanitarian field
  • Computer skills (common Microsoft Windows and Office applications)

  • Excellent writing and editing skills in English
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
