Position Title: Global Director – Pledge for Change

Reporting To: Executive Director

Working Closely With: MEAL Coordinator, Program Manager

Duration: 12 months

Starting Date: Immediately

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

Adeso is a vibrant African-based development and humanitarian organization. At Adeso, we work with African communities that are on the path toward realizing their full potential by working inside these communities to create environments in which Africans can thrive. We work to prevent and overcome situations that adversely affect community well-being by: reinvigorating the economy, developing skills for life and work, providing humanitarian aid, and influencing policy. For the past 30 years, we have strengthened rural livelihoods through environmental awareness, training, technology transfer, and innovative humanitarian projects in pursuit of a peaceful, self-reliant, and greener future. Currently, Adeso has programs in Somalia. In addition, Adeso has proven itself to be one of the foremost leaders in the ongoing global effort to decolonize the humanitarian and development aid system. Adeso currently leads a coalition of INGOs to re-imagine their roles in aid and how they can contribute to shifting power towards Global South communities that aid claims to support. Adeso is a great place to work that is currently experiencing managed rapid growth. We have great benefits, a great team, and we pride ourselves on our opportunities for personal growth and development.

PROJECT SUMMARY

The Pledge for Change was convened by Degan Ali, Executive Director of Adeso, and Mary Ana McGlasson, Director of the Centre for Humanitarian Leadership, who supported Adeso in making Pledge for Change a reality. Over the course of 18 months, several INGO leaders joined the initiative as they had a personal commitment to change the current workings of the global aid system. The Pledge recognizes a changing world, and particularly one where International NGOs are increasingly working with national and local organizations worldwide to respond to crises and improve their communities. The Pledge reflects an acknowledgement of the unequal power dynamics in the development and aid sectors and the need to ensure a fairer future, and particularly the role INGOs must play in ensuring global south civil society and communities continues to grow and flourish. The Pledge grew organically through informal conversations between dedicated leaders representing civil society in the global north and global south and focuses on three areas of change: Equitable Partnerships, Authentic Storytelling, and Global Influencing. The Pledge was launched on October 27, 2022 with seven Signatories: Action Aid, CARE International, Christian Aid, the International Rescue Committee, Oxfam International, Plan International, and Save the Children International. Adeso seeks to expand the number of Signatories and supporting organizations who endorse the Pledge and has already received multiple inquiries and expressions of support and endorsement.
