The Opportunity

The GIS Specialist will build and maintain GIS databases and will utilise the GIS software to analyse the spatial and non-spatial information in the databases, this will include mapping of humanitarian needs, premises, service facilities and other programmatic implementation and operational data, which will support evidence-based decision making by Save the Children’s teams.

Furthermore, the GIS Specialist will support feasibility assessments for all Save the Children’s thematic and support departments, to support sustainability and guide programme adaptations. In addition, the GIS Specialist will work with the MEAL and business development teams to provide a reliable source of information as needed and possible using GIS database and systems.

The role is expected to foster relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders including – Country Office Colleagues including MEAL, Technical Specialists, Operations Team, IT team; and SC Regional & Member staff.

Context: Sudan, Khartoum (with frequent visits to field sites across Darfur States, Kordofan States, Red Sea, Sennar, Blue Nile, etc).

In order to be successful, you will bring/have:

Essential

• Advanced university degree (MSC/MA in education, psychology, sociology or other social science field is required.
• Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (e.g. computer science, geography, engineering).
• Profound knowledge of ArcGIS specifically.
• Minimum of 5 years experience of utilising GIS and IT knowledge systems.
• High analytical capacity and detail-oriented to effectively analyze information and databases.
• Comprehensive computer skills across multiple IT packages and systems.
• Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate and work with departmental staff and management, including at a distance
• Diplomatic mind-set, respectful of the diversity of experiences and points of view in intercultural teams.
• Proven organizational skills with an ability to deliver consistently to deadlines on operational and project responsibilities.
• Demonstrated capacity to work autonomously under pressure and with tight deadlines.
• Ideally, previous experience of at least one year in an IT, GIS or analytical capacity for an aid organisation.
