The Pacific Community (SPC) is the principal scientific and technical organisation in the Pacific region, supporting development since 1947. We are an international development organisation owned and governed by our 27 country and territory members. In pursuit of sustainable development to benefit Pacific people, our organisation works across more than 25 sectors. We are known for our knowledge and innovation in such areas as fisheries science, public health surveillance, geoscience, and conservation of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture.

The Geoscience, Energy and Maritime Division provides advice, technical assistance, research and training support to Pacific Island countries and territories (PICTs). There are three (3) areas of scientific programming and two areas of focus within this division:

  1. Oceans and Maritime Programme (OMP) – assists member countries with services that provide applied ocean science and knowledge for evidence-based policy-making and technical solutions for improved ocean and maritime governance, management, and capacity development.
  2. Georesources and Energy Programme (GEP) – assists member countries by applying technical knowledge in the areas of geoscience and sustainable energy use.
  3. Disaster and Community Resilience Programme (DCRP) – assists member countries to demonstrate strengthened resilience through integrated action on disaster risk management, climate change adaptation, natural resource management and increased access to water and sanitation.

The role – GIS Graduate x2 will provide data management support for the GeoNode system specifically the Pacific Risk Information System (PacRIS) and Nexus Instance. The successful candidates will support the technical staff with the relevant data processing, particularly in datasets for the PCRAFI II Team, and the wider DCRP Program.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

Assist in spatial data management

  • This role will assist the Survey Team Leader and Technical Data Assistants in spatial data management of PCRAFI II data and other DCRP-similar related activities as tasked by Survey Team Leader such as:
    • Assist Technical Data assistants with pre and post processing work needed for Exposure data collection surveys in the country.
    • Assist Technical Data assistants in migrating PCRAFI spatial datasets from PacRIS into Nexus and georeferencing historical images.

Assist the PCRAFI II Training

  • This role will assist the PCRAFI II SPC Technical Team in the preparation of resources and materials needed to conduct any PARTneR-2 and DCRP-related training and workshop in which the role will also assist to answer any GIS-related queries posed by training participants or SPC staff.

Reporting and other tasks

  • Reporting and any other tasks as assigned by PCRAFI II Survey Team Leader:
    • Provide weekly updates of work done and any issues faced to Survey Team Leader via an email update and at team meetings.

Key selection criteria

Qualifications

  • Bachelor in Geospatial Science.

Technical expertise

  • At least 3-6 months of work experience in a similar field with basic GIS skills.
  • Basic experience (3-6 months) in digitization, validation, and cleaning of geospatial data.
  • Ability to analyze and manage spatial datasets.
  • Knowledge of QGIS/ArcGIS and any other GIS suites.
  • Familiar with GIS concepts, standards, and cartographic designs.

Language skills

  • Excellent English communication skills (oral and written).

Interpersonal skills and cultural awareness

  • Ability to work in a multicultural, inclusive, and equitable environment.

Salary, terms and conditions

Contract Duration – 30th June 2025 – subject to renewal depending on funding and performance

Remuneration – The GIS Graduate is a band 6 position in SPC’s 2023 salary scale, with a commencing taxable salary range of FJD 1,892-2,365 per month, plus local staff benefits. An offer of appointment for an initial contract will normally be made in the lower half of this range, with due consideration given to experience and qualifications. Progression within the salary scale will be based on annual performance reviews.
