Gender Advisor – Brussels, Belgium (National)

Mission

Geneva Call is a neutral and impartial non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting respect for international humanitarian norms in armed conflict and other situations of violence. Geneva Call’s mission is to ensure that armed groups and de facto authorities (AGDA) respect International Humanitarian Law and basic humanitarian principles in the areas where they fight or they control.

Overall activities

As part of the Policy, Programmes, and Legal Unit, and under the supervision of its Head, the Gender Advisor is responsible for implementing the gender and intersectional approach to Geneva Call’s activities, policies, programmes, and projects through its 2024-2027 Strategic Plan. Additionally, the Gender Advisor will build the capacity of field staff on the incorporation and mainstreaming of gender and intersectional approaches to its programs and projects within regional, country, and thematic portfolios, in particular child protection, education in emergencies, health care, and starvation and food insecurity.

Main qualifications

Education and experience

• Minimum of a Master’s Degree or equivalent experience, plus at least 6 years of progressively responsible experience at national and international levels in the human rights and/or humanitarian sectors working on conflict-related sexual violence and gender discrimination in armed conflict.
• Master’s degree in international law, human rights, or other relevant field of study.

Technical skills

• Demonstrated specialized expertise in conflict-related sexual violence or sexual exploitation and abuse, as well as gender discrimination during armed conflict, including in relation to access to basic services and food insecurity.
• Demonstrated experience in integrating gender and intersectional issues within existing strategic plans, projects, and developing and executing implementation or action plans.
• Excellent writing skills.
• Excellent public speaking and training/capacity building skills for a wide variety of audiences, particularly in local humanitarian settings.
• Knowledge of and expertise in major gender-related policy and regulatory frameworks, including in relation to child protection, education in emergencies, health care, and food insecurity in armed conflict.
• Significant knowledge of international humanitarian law and human rights law and other sources.
• Existing relationships with peer organizations, experts, and other potential collaborators or conveners preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with individuals and teams at all levels, both internally and externally.
• Experience working in an international matrix structure in a positive and constructive manner.
• Ability to develop an individual work plan and to coordinate work around the availability of field teams.
• Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines.
• Ability to manage conflicting priorities and deliver to deadlines.
• Ability to integrate a gender and intersectional perspective into all aspects of work.

• French (preferred)
• Any other working language of Geneva Call (Spanish, Arabic) would be an asset.

• Ability to work in a team and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people of different nationalities, religions and cultural backgrounds.
• Strong communications skills (both written and verbal) at a level appropriate for high level external representation and ability to tailor communications to different audiences, particularly in local communities and with field staff in a wide variety of locations.
• Willingness and ability to travel at short notice.
• Ability to work independently and take initiative.

• Position : Gender Advisor
• Type of Contract: Fixed term contract (National position, only EU/AELE candidates will be considered)
• Activity rate: 80-100% – 1 year contract (subject to extension depending on funding availability)
