Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs

The Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs is a multidisciplinary center reporting directly to the University Provost’s Office that combines cutting edge global research initiatives, and academic training of undergraduates, graduates, and humanitarian aid practitioners. Through our deep engagement with the humanitarian community, we serve as a bridge between academia and ground level humanitarian action.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the HHSF develops and administers the graduate academic programs of the IIHA. The HHSF is a critical member of our New York-based team, working with the Executive Director, Programs Officers, faculty, students, interns, and research fellows on all our work.

The position is grant funded with a duration of 1-2 years, which is renewable.

Essential Functions

  • Promotes existing and new programs to external humanitarian partners and potential partners
  • Oversees, on a daily basis, the graduate and undergraduate academic programs and their respective curricula
  • Mentors and advises graduate and undergraduate students
  • Liaises with departments, programs, academic governance bodies, and IIHA-affiliated faculty
  • Collaborates with GSAS staff and IIHA staff on all aspects of graduate program support and promotion

Not responsible for supervision or oversight of others.

Additional Functions

  • While teaching is not the main function of this position, the HHSF may, with the Executive Director’s concurrence, teach at the undergraduate or graduate level, or participate in the Institute’s intensive professional training programs. The HHSF may also initiate or participate in current IIHA research depending on their own availability, research strengths and experience.

Required Qualifications: Education and Experience

  • Advanced degree in any discipline with a specialization in a field related to humanitarian affairs
  • Ideally, direct humanitarian experience.
  • Interest and knowledge of current international political events and the major players and issues in the humanitarian aid sector

Required Qualifications: Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team on concurrent projects
  • Ability to effectively multitask and prioritize
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Willingness to undertake occasional travel as needed
  • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills
