The Company

The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) is a policy and action research organisation. We promote sustainable development to improve livelihoods and protect the environments on which these livelihoods are built. We specialise in linking local priorities to global challenges. IIED has offices in London and Edinburgh. We work with partner organisations and local communities in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and the Pacific, with some of the world’s most vulnerable people. We work with them to strengthen their voice in the decision-making arenas that affect them – from village councils to international conventions.

This post is in the Forest Team of the Natural Resources Group (NRG). The NRG aims to promote sustainable governance of natural resources by building capacity and promoting informed decision-making in communities in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

We are looking for a Forest Finance Researcher to join our team on a permanent, full-time basis.

The Role

As a Forest Finance Researcher, you will support our programme of work on forests and prosperity across the Global South with special emphasis on sub-Saharan Africa.

Supporting the design, implementation and monitoring of innovative action research projects, you will focus on building forest finance knowledge, capabilities and interactions.

You will also conduct research with colleagues and/or partner organisations in low and middle-income countries and analyse and communicate findings.

Additionally, you will:

  • Contribute to policy-oriented action research on forest finance
  • Undertake capacity building around how organisations can improve access to forest finance
  • Evidence how forest finance flows can be improved
  • Create research findings for publication and dissemination targeting different audiences
  • Support Senior Researchers with the management of Forest Team projects

About You

To be considered as a Forest Finance Researcher, you will need:

  • Research experience in forest development work in Africa
  • Experience in a research technical capacity development in relevant areas
  • Knowledge of institutions, actors, debates and research agendas in the field of forestry and development
  • An understanding of how to work effectively with partners in developing countries, including work with government, civil society organisations and communities
  • Strong quantitative research skills
  • Strong conceptual, analytical, technical and synthesis skills
  • The willingness to travel to developing countries
  • To be educated to a degree level (or equivalent) in an area such as forestry, land use, economics or sustainable development

Experience working with developing country partners, including government partners and business practitioners would be beneficial to your application. Extended residential experience in Africa or other developing region countries would be desirable, as would a relevant postgraduate degree.

Experience in climate finance access for local organisations would be equally as advantageous. Fluency in another relevant international language such as Spanish, French, Portuguese, and/or Swahili, in addition to English, would also be highly desirable.
