Forensic Specialist 1 (maternity leave replacement – 1 year contract)

Purpose:

The Forensic Specialist 1 based in Athens is responsible for contributing towards the implementation of the programmes and activities related to forensic science and management of human remains, with a particular focus on deceased/missing migrants.

The Forensic Specialist 1 provides advice and technical guidance as necessary on forensic issues deemed relevant by the delegation and is particularly involved in the setting up of scheduled activities related to the proper management of the dead and the search of deceased/missing migrants.

Main operational responsibilities:

Under the overall supervision of Forensic Specialist 2 and in close coordination with Protection department s/he:

  • Implements forensic programs in the field and provides forensic expertise.
  • Assists with contribution to the delegations’ strategic orientations and priorities.
  • Assists in establishing and/or adapting delegation’s forensic strategy, specific objectives, plans of action, timelines and the required resources, in cooperation with Forensic Specialist 2, in line with the delegation’s objectives.
  • Assists with conducting a comprehensive Forensic country needs analysis and evaluation of the medico-legal system in Greece.
  • Assists with developing a forensic strategy and PoA in line with the assessment’s findings to ensure an appropriate programmatic approach in strengthening the Forensic humanitarian action.
  • Performs field trip visits in the islands and mainland, carries out forensic assessments on issues related with migration, management of the dead, identification of human remains, documentation and disposition of bodies, burials etc., and helps communicate with the local forensic interlocutors.
  • Actively promotes, advises and where appropriate helps develop guidance on forensic best practice.
  • Contributes to conducting forensic analysis of the context and to the delegation’s regular reporting.
  • Provides and/or facilitates as required training sessions and workshops internally and externally.
  • With guidance from the Forensic Specialist 2, represents the ICRC in contacts with the authorities on all forensic-related matters at national level.
  • Supervise and coaches staff doing forensic-related work in the field (e.g. Forensic Program Assistant).

Ideal profile

Minimum required knowledge & experience:

  • Postgraduate degree in medical, biological or forensic sciences (Masters’ degree or equivalent).
  • Fluent command of Greek and English, knowledge of other languages an asset.
  • At least 6 years proven experience in forensic practice.
  • Contribution to scientific publications on forensic practice, especially in the field of humanitarian and human rights investigations, a strong asset.
  • Experience in negotiations and public relations, particularly in promoting the implementation of professional and ethical standards in his/her field of expertise.
  • Proven skills and experience in communicating/raising awareness on forensic issues and ability to adapt messages to different audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including experience and capacity to work constructively in teams under considerable pressure.
  • Experience in facilitating/performing forensic training.
  • Very good computer skills.
  • Very high organizational and case management skills.
  • An excellent attention to detail.
  • Good method and analytical skills.

Desirable

  • Experience in forensic practice applied to humanitarian or human rights investigations is an asset
