Objectives

MSF WaCA under the aegis of AHCE recognizes that climate change and environmental deterioration will increasingly increase humanitarian needs. MSF WaCA joins MSF Canada, which plays a leadership and support role in (re)positioning the movement to respond effectively and responsibly to this unprecedented threat to humanity.

Reporting to the Head of MSF WaCA, the Climate Adaptation Facilitator is responsible for co-developing and supporting climate change adaptation at MSF WaCA and managing the program. The person in this position will help MSF WaCA integrate and expand adaptation and thereby facilitate evidence-based action, operational choices and advocacy on climate change/environmental degradation and their health and humanitarian consequences.

Main responsibilities / Activities

• Co-develop, support and expand MSF WaCA’s adaptation to climate change through analysis (information synthesis, time series analysis, remote sensing analysis, spatial analysis, etc.), product creation (briefing notes, scoping reviews, seasonal calendars, weather forecasts, maps, etc.) and internal and external communication
• Support response to ad hoc requests from MSF staff regarding early warning, seasonal climate preparedness, climate change adaptation and awareness/advocacy that are strategically aligned within MSF WaCA and HACE
• Help build climate adaptation capacity at regional and national levels
• Analyze, synthesize information, write about climate and environmental factors impacting the people MSF assists (now and in the future), as well as country and region-specific analyses

Communications and advocacy

• Contribute to the promotion, dissemination and advancement of MSF WaCA’s climate adaptation operational research project.
• Provide relevant content on adaptation measures on the MSF Climate Hub platform
• Participate in the development of resources, and leverage existing ones within MSF, on operational adaptation and anticipatory action in light of climate change, integrating climate action framework and messages across MSF
• Contribute to the development of an advocacy strategy around climate, environment, health and global health issues, for internal and external audiences.
• Instill the approach of climate adaptation, humanitarian action on climate and environment in all departments.
• Ensure that tools, materials, activities and messages are inclusive, needs-based and community/mission-centered.
• Raise awareness on an ongoing basis and encourage proactivity on the need to decolonize humanitarian and climate action and to include MSF colleagues, communities, indigenous knowledge and youth in climate hotspots and most affected by climate change in research, testimony and story preparation
• Engage and collaborate with MSF to help democratize climate and environmental knowledge and MSF’s current framework and work.
• Organize or participate in webinars, workshops, strategic discussions with other MSF chapters and associations, to contribute to capacity building and public and external storytelling, as well as knowledge exchange

Strategic collaboration and representation

• Communicate and ensure complementarity of work with other MSF WaCA departments but also with HACE and other MSF colleagues working on adaptation (and mitigation) and other related initiatives.
• Share knowledge, tools and resources with the movement on adaptation issues related to the climate crisis; participate in existing platforms (climate-environment and health working group, adaptation working group, GHAN network); communicate with partners: MSF Climate Smart, Geneva operational center – Global Health Alliance, operational centers and other resource persons, Swedish innovation unit, ITF projects, etc., as well as external networks.
• Engage and collaborate with our MOU partners, HACE and Climate Smart.
• Based on field experiences, data and scientific evidence, support and contribute to the call for responsible and ecologically sustainable action that highlights the health impacts and humanitarian needs of disproportionately marginalized and already vulnerable populations
• Contribute to the creation, evaluation and dissemination of climate adaptation tools and products in partnership with HACE.
• Coordinate, develop or participate in the development of new resources, training, guidance as needed to ensure efficient use of resources, avoid duplication and expand organizational capacity for climate action and adaptation.

Risk Management

• Understand and support the mitigation of legal, financial, reputational and duty of care risks for MSF WaCA, considering the impact of climate change and environmental degradation on health, such as operational and reputational risks, potential mandatory costs and legal liability to reduce and pay for carbon emissions (versus the current moral and voluntary nature of mitigation activities).
• Recognize and support the impacts of climate change on mental health, and liaise with existing expertise and support services.

Job requirements

Education / Qualification / Pre-requisites

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in environmental meteorology

Professional experience required

• Demonstrated experience in climate-related research, data analysis, information synthesis, writing
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience of adaptation, environment and/or climate change, public health, humanitarian action, emergency response, international cooperation and development issues
• Demonstrated experience in multi-stakeholder engagement and diverse partnerships, complex coordination, diplomacy and cross-cutting and inter-sectoral work on interdisciplinary issues
• Direct experience in general program management, budgetary control, financial planning, prioritization and decision-making
• Demonstrated communication and group presentation skills
• Knowledge of contemporary climate action approaches and frameworks (e.g., global health, climate change anticipation and adaptation, early warning, resilience building, mitigation, environmental sustainability and integration of climate and environmental perspectives into humanitarian action)
• Skills, knowledge and prior use of geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing products

Languages Skills

• · Both working proficiency in English and French
