Through the implementation of our evidence based model of Integrated Student Supports, this school year we expect to connect approximately 8,400 students in 16 schools to targeted interventions and services by bringing community resources into schools, thus mitigating and eliminating non-academic barriers to student achievement. CISM embeds full-time Student Support Specialists in schools to individually case manage students as well as connect the whole school to services. Summary:

The Finance Manager reports to the Chief of Staff and is responsible for supporting monthly close, compliance, and financial planning and analysis activities for Communities In Schools of Memphis(CISM).

The person in this new and integral role will work collaboratively with others to ensure that the organization complies with requirements for federally funded programs and that internal control standards are met. The Finance Manager will support CISM in preparing for its Single Audit.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Finance and Budgeting

The Finance Manager will have overall financial management responsibility including the review and approval of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting materials and metrics for the executive team and board of directors. She or he will oversee budgeting, financial forecasting, cash flow and coordination of audit activities as well as accounts payable and receivable. The ideal candidate will not only be able to reconcile financial activities but should be skilled at capturing key data and processes in order to demonstrate the relationship between CISM’s goals and resulting fundraising needs.

  • Partner with the executive team to prepare the organization for its Single Audit. Prepare and deliver training, ensure compliance with program requirements, and perform monthly sampling and review of transactions for compliance. Gather information requested for and otherwise support the Single Audit.
  • Contribute to the monthly close by preparing journal vouchers, account reconciliations, reports, and financial statement analysis.
  • Prepare the monthly detailed salaries forecast for review by the CEO/COS .
  • Prepare invoices and accounts receivable journal entries and reconcile them to the general ledger and external guidelines. Monitor receivables for timely receipt and address any delays. Prepare program reports for grantors.
  • Support annual budget development by partnering with the Operations Manager/Specialist to create tools, templates, and training for the organization. Prepare content for presentations and the accounting system budget upload file.
  • Support the Operations Manager with monthly reconciliation of federal and state reimbursements along with credit card reconciliation
  • Support the annual external audit by preparing select financial statements, footnotes and providing requested information for the auditors.
  • Support the annual review and update of CISM’s fiscal policies and procedures.
  • Support the Chief of Staff in preparing the Form 990s.
  • Assist the Financial Analyst with accounting system maintenance.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Finance Manager will have at least 5-plus years of experience, with at least two years managing the finance and administration of a $4 million to $7 million organization or business unit. The successful candidate will have experience leading planning efforts and running operationally effective organizations that have multiple functional areas. The Finance Manager must harness technology solutions in order to quickly and efficiently communicate resources needed for key activities and performance against plans. Working knowledge of public education is preferred, but not mandatory. Nonprofit experience is a plus, with a strong preference operating in a fast growing environment that has limited budgets and resources.

Specific competencies include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business/finance related field and/ or CPA strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding of accounting principles and applications.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial management and accounting
  • Experience with audit, legal compliance, and budget development
  • Organization development, human resources management experience
  • Proven effectiveness managing others, empowering them to make decisions
  • Technologically savvy, with experience overseeing information technology staff or vendors
  • Experience effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, the Board or other outside partners/influencers/clients
  • Success seeing beyond the numbers, identifying trends and new possibilities
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, including Excel, Access, Word and Outlook and Google Suites required. Prior experience with Google Drive is highly desired.
  • Prior experience with accounting software and databases is highly desired (Xero, Quickbooks, etc.).
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and communication skills. The ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, legal language or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and policy or procedure manuals. Ability to express ideas concisely and clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and the capacity to work well with diverse individuals at all levels, inside and outside the organization.
  • Strong analytical skills. The ability to gather, understand and synthesize information from a variety of sources.
  • The ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages; and work with mathematical concepts and apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills required, as well as the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Accounts receivable and investment reconciliation experience strongly preferred.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred.
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in a nonprofit organization and at least 2 years of management experience; demonstrated success in a development function (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources).

  • Demonstrated understanding of CISM– its mission and outcomes– and a solid grasp of the role it plays in the landscape of public education in Memphis and Shelby County.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Will require some light lifting
  • Most travel will be local, with regular visits to partner schools and district offices so reliable transportation will be important. Candidate must be willing to travel occasionally out of town to events such as CIS National conferences and state convening’s.

HOURS:

This is a full-time position. Working hours are generally 8:30 – 5:00 p.m., however it is expected that this person will have a flexible schedule and will work additional hours as needed to accommodate evening and weekend activities and reporting deadlines.
