Karuna-Shechen

About Karuna-Shechen: Founded by the Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard in 2000, Karuna-Shechen implements projects for disadvantaged populations of India, Nepal and Tibet in the sectors of Education (schools, literacy, training), Health (hospitals and mobile clinics, hygiene and sanitation), Environment (solar panels, biological gardens) and Community Development (women empowerment, preservation of local culture). Every year, more than 380,000 people benefit from our help. Bihar and Jharkhand are the two poorest states of India. Identically, closed until 1950, Nepal is today one of the poorest countries in the world with an HDI ranked 142th out of 189. Which is why Karuna-Shechen has been implementing development programs in these two respective countries since 2000. A team of 160 employees and about 50 volunteers support the association on a daily basis, most of the employees and volunteers are on the ground in Kathmandu (Nepal) and Bihar/Jharkhand (India), and the rest are located in France, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Hong Kong. The HQ is based in Paris. Karuna-Shechen collects more than $4 million in donations worldwide every year. In 2022, the organization would like to develop programs in France for the underprivileged.
