The international Red Cross and Red Crescent network is the largest humanitarian network in the world with a presence and activities in almost every country. All Red Cross and Red Crescent activities have one central purpose: to help those who suffer, without discrimination, whether during conflict, in response to natural or man-made disasters, or due to conditions of chronic poverty.

Red Cross in Denmark is present in Ukraine and scaling up its operation to meet demands. We are looking for a highly qualified field communication delegate.

In Ukraine our primary partnership is with the Ukraine Red Cross Society (URCS). Our programmes in Ukraine are identified and planned in close collaboration with URCS at national and local levels.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

In close cooperation and coordination with the DRC Communication department based in Copenhagen, and Regional Office, the Field communication delegate is responsible of:

Strategic communication

Adapt, implement and evaluate the communication strategy for DRC Country Office in line with the operational and country strategy and Regional/Global priorities:

  • Adapt the communication plan, revise the communication objectives, the audiences, tools and deliverables.
  • Evaluate the success rate of communications activities, in coordination with the Regional and HQ communication teams.

Operate as a member of the Program and Operations team:

  • Directly manage the communication and information officer.
  • Contribute to the overall management and strategic discussions of the operation, bringing the external perception angle to the discussion.
  • Actively participate in humanitarian diplomacy efforts by providing sounds messages and products in coordination with management and program team.

Operate as a member of DRC communication and partnerships team to support a coordinated approach to communications between the field and Regional/Global levels:

  • Attend regular in country and regional/global communication meetings to discuss communication talking lines based on the field reality.
  • Join online collaboration and editorial platforms for exchange about topics related to communications, as well as for information and content sharing.
  • Support field visits from partners, DRC HQ and representatives.

Media relation

Manage media relations in/from Ukraine around the conflict crisis, in coordination with the regional and HQ team:

  • Draft press releases, media pitches and other media material as needed.
  • Coordinate interviews and prep spokespeople.
  • Organize project site visits and facilitate photo and video coverage by journalists.
  • Develop and update key messages to be distributed.
  • Anticipate, identify and flag potential reputational risks and work with the Country and Regional team to implement appropriate proactive or reactive response.

Multimedia production

Capture compelling multimedia material:

  • Capture photos and videos and develop a narrative to tell human-interest stories with a focus on donors’ visibility.
  • Collaborate with URCS and other partners and media outlets on gathering multimedia material.
  • Record and submit comprehensive data and information of video and photo content captured (i.e. consent form, captions, extended narrative).
  • Produce multimedia material that is in line with the ethical values and principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
  • Share multimedia material with journalists, as needed, and disseminate it on digital platforms, including shared.ifrc.org, newsroom and social media.

Support donor relation efforts:

  • Adapt, implement and evaluate the donors’ visibility plan, as needed.
  • Ensure that donors’ visibility requirements are fulfilled, in close collaboration with the donors’ relations focal point in country or regional level.
  • Support the team with the production of goods to ensure relevant donors’ visibility and in line with DRC’s Branding Guidelines.
  • Support donors’ visibility on digital platforms, including social media, website, and on multimedia material.

Partnerships

Strengthen strategic partnerships URCS, Movement partners and communications focal points at the UN, INGOs:

  • Coordinate and work with strategic communication partners on the ground, including communications focal points at the UN, INGOs, and the Communications Working Group.
  • Strengthening the capacity of the URCS through communications training, to be conducted in collaboration with ICRC and IFRC.
  • Collaborate with URCS, ICRC and IFRC on joint communications activities, including site visits and production of public information material to illustrate the work of the Movement.

Support community engagement and accountability activities:

  • Produce public information material, including educational photo and poster exhibitions to be disseminated at local URCS branches and within communities.
  • Produce infographics and provide support to the community engagement efforts on the production of visual material, in line with the strategic priorities of the DRC operation.

About You

To be successful at this role we expect you to possess the following:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in communications, advocacy and/or media relations, or journalism
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working in the international humanitarian or development sector or a related field in a developing country
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for engaging regularly with donors, other humanitarian organizations, and both national and expat staff.
  • Ability to engage and coordinate seamlessly with various teams to achieve tasks required
  • Detail oriented with excellent English language writing and editing skills.
  • Experience in leading production of high value communication and external reports products.
  • Flexibility and adaptability for working under the pressure of multiple deadlines and competing priorities.
  • Robust mentality working and living in a country with conflicts and a changing humanitarian context.

How to apply

Employment conditions

The field communication delegate reports to the Head of Programme. The duty station is Chernivtsi and accommodation will be provided. Ukraine is a non-family position. You might be relocated to a different location or country if needed because of the situation in Ukraine.

The starting date of the assignment is envisioned as soon as possible. The length of the contract will be 6 months.

The contract will be administered in accordance with the Red Cross in Denmark’s Terms and Conditions for Delegates. The monthly salary including allowances and pension will be from DKK 43,000 to 45,300 depending on experience and qualifications.
