Austrian Red Cross

Background

The current Red Cross Red Crescent WASH response architecture, focusing on water supply, basic sanitation, and Hygiene Promotion, is designed for flexibility in terms of context and scale as well as efficiency and appropriateness by prioritizing local and regional capacity. With the Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) Emergency response Unit (ERU), IFRC is going to incorporate for the first time FS treatment into the sanitation service chain as a technical competency in a Global WASH response system. The FSM ERU will, at the point of desludging the sanitation facilities, link directly to the services of the MSM 20 ERU, being responsible for the whole FSM service chain, including treatment until disposal or reuse of the final product.

Through a competence mapping of RCRC Movement staff and volunteers around FSM we realized that we do have a diverse group of people with a wide range of previous experiences. To make sure that we can train everyone according to ERU standards, we will need to set up a tiered training approach,

  • starting with a basic online training package for the FSM ERU members. This training package will cover core topics (theory and practice) of FS treatment.
  • After the successful completion of this there will be the actual 10-day training in Uganda. During 5 such trainings we will train 6-10 participants per IFRC Region (Africa, Americas, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Middle East-North Africa).

For all elements, a balanced training agenda is required, with appropriate time for classroom-based activities but also outdoor sessions with a very practical, hands-on approach (7-day training). At the end of the training process there will be a 3-day Train of Trainer (ToT) to make sure that participants feel confident to cascade the FSM training to peers in their region.

In order to prepare and supervise all elements of these trainings the Austrian Red Cross is looking for an FSM Training Delegate
